Yes. It is the most popular language in the world and more often than not, at least one person can speak English well in any country. Also, if I didn't know English, I wouldn't be able to participate here in MyLot, right?

English is currently the world's 'lingua franca' for two main reasons. Firstly it's flexible. Sentence structure isn't so rigid as, say, French, it's easy to invent new words and English is constantly borrowing words and phrases from other languages and making them its own. (You can see an example in the first sentence!) The second reason English is the main language for business and commerce is because for about the last 300 years the top (or one of the top) nations has been an English-speaking nation. (Britain until about 1945 and then America since then). The British colonisation of North America, Africa, the Indian sub-continient and Australasia meant there was a large swathe of the globe that had English as it's first or at least a second language. American cultural domination since the second half of the 20th century has built on this. As has been mentioned there is no reason to suppose it will always stay this way. Latin was the dominant language for far longer than English has been - and look what happened to that. If America is superceed as the worlds #1 nation by a non-English speaking nation then it could change. Or perhaps English will do what it has done since the days of the Norman Conquest (and what Latin didn't do) - adapt to meet the challenge.

Nice one, Murph. I would just add that the internet has added to the English language's stranglehold on international communications. English is the language of the net and this means that, for the foreseeable future, plenty of people will have to learn to read and write it as well as speak it. It looks to have things pretty sewn up, doesn't it? As an English speaker myself, it would be easy to leave it at that and say: "Great - let everyone learn English then." Selfish, yes, but actually it makes sense too. English is the nearest we have at present to a universal language and it is taught nearly everywhere. To change that and start using another language would take enormous effort and cause huge problems in the intervening period. So it may be that the easiest answer is also the best - just keep using English. As you have pointed out, it is quite well-suited to the task anyway, being as flexible as it is. And there's another thing. The English themselves are absolutely hopeless at learning other languages - take pity and don't force them to even attempt the task!

Aghorri - Agree about the Internet and it's true about computers in general, virtually all computer innovation (I'm not talking about manufacture) was done by English speakers, predominately British and American. All the verbs in the computer languages are, AFAIK, English. swasti - Well they might and they might not. English is only the second most popular language in the world for the spoken word, but as I mentioned earlier it DOES have a lot of inbuilt advantages that will keep it the #1 commercial and de-facto international communication standard for many years to come.

It is possible to do everything without English but then the exposure will be limited. In China or Japan, if you see the developement you must admit that the pioneer who brought those developement to their Country were able to speak English. many of the Chinese do not know English when they are inside China or Japan but if they comeout to get more exposure then Tey learn it.

A country can be very well developed without knowing the English language, it does make international trade a lot easier as English is spoken all around the world. Spanish is also spoken a lot worldwide as well as French, but English still seams to be running fastest to becoming the worlds nr. 1 language. It looks great on your resumay too and I could recommend anyone to learn at least the basics but I don't think it's neccessairy to come by (just a lot more easy when you can).

May be locally you can survive without english. But when you want to go abroad or work in offices, english is a must. Even for learning purposes, lot of books in technology and other subjects are in english only. So english is very important.

The general populous may not speak English, but the key player mostly do or have translators as part of their escort. As well as some English speaking leader, speak those languages or have translators as well. What would be nice is if the human race could develop one unified language one day, so everyone speaks the same thing and all understand each other.

Dear friend, As India was once under the British rule I hope Indians has learned a lot of English its official use through the British rule. May more of Indian school standards are evaluated by the way how they keep their English. It is evident that English is mostly used language for most of business and official correspondences and also its importance is well focused in every Central government sectors all over India. Even though Hindi is consider the National language, English is given more importance all over India for correspondence in and out of India. All these shows English is very important. Even what we type now and read now is only because we know how to type and read English.

I can understand your feeling. But I have to say that English is really very important in recent years for many reasons, the powerful of the USA and the British, the populaiton of the speakers, the so deep influence of that language, the tolerance and the allowance of English for instance. It is the truth that China and Japan and the other many countries are developing so fast and their ranks are getting higher and higher, not higher than the USA and Brithsh though. In my opinion, the present situation will last for another period of time. But the day that Chinese and Spanish etc.will outrun English is around the corner.

Hi, English language is universal, its better to learn Enlish language if you do speak it either as your second language or so. A business Man once said if you are doing business and you do not English, you are finish.Although i not understand what this meant but i know it's very important,it's no Man's Language.

I believe that English and Chinese are two of the most important languages to know for commerce. I think that if you plan on doing any sort of international business you need to be competent in these two. Aside from that, I agree about the difficulty of surviving in western countries without English, but I think it can be done.

Hello dear swasti. I think that it is very important for one to know English. My reason for this is as follows. Well, I am a native-born Chinese. Nowadays in China, there are many companies demanding the applicants to have passed the English level test, like CET4 or CET6, namely, College English Test Band 4 and College English Test Band 6, which is a higher level than CET4. It seems that once you have passed either of the tests, it will enable you to find a job more easily than one who has not passed the test. The reason for those companies, big or small, is mainly due to the fact that most of the companies are inclined to do international business with customers from all over the world, which offers more business opportunities for the enhancement and development of the companies. Thus, a good understanding of English as a way of communication is considered to be very important. That's why English learning and English tests is so important in China, since it is considered to be an international language for communication. Thanks a lot for your discussion, dear swasti.

It is not so Swasti. Respect do not come from the language, infact come from your decency. Probably you might have posted those words to have a discussion and not your opinion. Matured mind never see decency in which language you speak, Being a person travelled almost around the globe including 102 countries from all five continents, I can say without doubt that not only English language is not connected with decency or prestige. Japanese people drive their society with their language and knowing English is not considered as a prestige here or not knowing is a minus point. It is for people from countries like India ruled by British people who created an impression on Indian people that everything white skin people talk and do is dignity and prestige. That is called slavery in the modern age. It is pitty really, but sorry to put those in such words. No development comes from language, development comes from the mind and self respect. Keep rolling. You are at 565. Best of luck.

I do believe speaking english in North America is very important.I also feel that if you move to another country in any part of the world you should learn their language.Once while I was in Florida I got stuck in a plaza that only had Cuban or Spanish people.I went into this restaurant and tried to get something to drink because I was dieing from thirst. No one in that plaza spoke one word english. They never even understood the word orange and this is in Florida. Why do people segregate in one place and refuse to learn to speak english in an english speaking country. Now I call that really rude.

English is the universal language so definitely you have an advantage when you know how to speak, read and write it.
