Does colouring your hair have to damage it?

I get highlights in my black hair, but they seem to get very dry and damaged, sometimes breaking. I also condition frequently and try not to treat my hair unkindly. Any tips or ideas for how to avoid this. Or better still ways to be kind or improve hair quality in general? Ta

try to color your hair every 6 to 8 weeks, you keep putting color on top of color your gonna get color build up,and the more you do this the more dry your hair will be.use a leave in conditioner at all times, and use color treated shampoo and conditioner.also use maynaise for a deep conditioner maybe 1 time a week, and trim your ends every 4 to 6 weeks.do not fully blow dry your hair,if its curly use a diffuser.if you tie your hair back use a coated rubber hair band to prevent damage.everytime you get highlites in your hair, are you using bleach everytime,or are you using just a higher volume peroxide?

What is the difference between the higher volume peroxide and bleach? I think its bleach but it doesn't smell that bad...

the difference is the bleach is more harsh on the hair, and the liquid peroxide is not as harsh and its a little more gentle.it comes in 20,30,40 volume, and since you have such dark hair i would go with the 40 volume and leave it on for 30 minutes.

I've heard that coloring your hair at the salon is far better for your hair than coloring it at home from a kit you buy in a store. So if you're bottle-coloring, you might want to invest in a salon color. It's really expensive though. You might also want to get a spray-in leave-in conditioner or try one of those hot-oil deep conditioning treatments. Don't blow dry your hair. Don't comb it when it's wet. Use only elastics that are coated with fabric if you like to put your hair up. I hope this helps.

you can try a shampoo and conditioner that have humctress in like Nexxus and Sauve also have one too its great on colored treated hair permed or relaxed hair. Wash hair every 3 or 4 days let the conditioner set for about 10mins under a cap and you'll start seeing and feeling the difference in your hair.

I use conditionier in my hair everytime I wash it and my hair is soft. I also color it monthly. I am so grey that I cannot stand it. I have a skunk strip without my monthly coloring. LOL

Bleaches of any kind (what is used for highlights unless your hair is blonde and your highlights are brown) will always have potential to damage your hair pretty much. However, getting it done professionally they should know the proper ways to do it. I do my own hair and the only time I've ever had problems was bleaching my hair too often! Your hair should be colored about every 6 weeks to keep it safe.

You are defintetly right about treating your hair kindly. The best thing to do with highlights is to deep condition regularly. Find a good shampoo for color treated hair that makes yours feel fab afterwards and a few good conditioners that make your hair feel fab and ready to style too. The best thing to do about highlighted hair is prevent it from damaging. If you can find a good moisturizer to keep it moisturized daily or as needed, I'd go with that. I also have high lights. I deep condition every single time that I wet my hair and it works!
