I just did something kind of spontaneous...

I was on Facebook looking through the Marketplace on a whim and saw that someone had a cat and kitten for free. I clicked on the ad and read that the last tenant at their apartment had abandoned the animals and they needed a new home. Of course I love animals, especially cats, and have been wanting to get one since I moved into a place that allows pets. I told the person I would take them without even giving it a second thought! Now I have said I will go look at them and can probably take them home today!! I haven't even asked my boyfriend, let alone taken into account the $300 pet deposit :\ Oops. I hope he is not too mad at me when he gets home. I told the person I will wait to ask him and then come look... I am such a sucker for this kind of thing! I can afford the deposit and food, litter, etc BUT I just realized I am going out of town in a few weeks. I wonder what I would do with them at that point? Could I take them with me? Could I leave them all alone? I have a friend in town, maybe she could take care of them while we're gone. What have I gotten myself into?! Sometimes I am a dummy :X

I'm sorry Molly, but there is something I don't understand. If the animals have been abandoned then why is there a $300 fee (or deposit)? I would have thought that someone would have given them to you either for free or paid you to take them. pet food can be expensive, but not that much. If you are going away then it may be possible to take them with you, but it would be better if you could get someone to look after them for the time you are away.

The cats are free. I have to pay my apartment a deposit to have them. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that.

Thanks for clearing it up, I wouldn't say you are a dummy, just someone with a kind heart.

It's a sweet thing you did. You may well save those cats from the pound -- which they might be adopted from, but then they might not. As for traveling. My cats have no problems with being alone for a week to 10 days. After that they get annoyed. I just make sure they have fresh litter and plenty of food and water - I have an "auto feeder" and "auto waterer". The food dish holds 3 lbs of food, and it takes them 2 weeks to eat that much. The water dish holds a gallon. Usually, I put some water in the bathroom or kitchen sink as well, just in case.

Ugh, I'm just like you. I'm a total sucker for animals that need a home. I don't have a pet right now because my apartment doesn't allow it, but I'm dyiiiing for one. I'm afraid to go to humane society to get a kitty though, because I'd probably come home with 3, lol.

Almost this same thing happened to me a while ago, except I knew the people whose neighbors abandoned their cats. My friends showed up at my apartment when my roommate was home for lunch, and showed them to her... of course, she called me at work and said we had to keep them, so I told her okay. We didn't get to keep them when we moved, but we had them for about 6 months. We went out of town for a long weekend once, and my sister stopped by and checked up on them for us. We also had to go out of town overnight, and I just made sure they had a clean litterbox, plenty of food, and extra water while we were gone. They did just fine! :)

I don't have pets right now but have always in the past. They were never a problem if I went away. I was always able to find a friend or neighbor willing to check in on them and see that they got food and walks etc. If in a bind, there are always professional pet sitters. Now lets just hope the boyfriend is ok with this.

I'm glad you love cats and I think you've done the right thing. Leave them with your friend when you're away or have someone come and check on the little ones every day. You will do fine. Blessings.

How funny- I hope it all worked out for you- I am reading this late. Kittens and cats are great fun- I’d have the friend look after them for you- I am sure that some cats travel ok- my cat Gracie howls when she gets in the car!

I love animals, but I am a dog person, but I would have to ask my husband first. He's the one who pays the bill.I guess the $300 per pet deposit is to pay for the mess they will make tearing up curtains and scratching the furniture, not to mention urinating on the walls. It will be hard when you go out of town, though. My younger son got a kitten, and he had to go to a wedding and was away for just one day and the kitten got very upset.

Well, I have never had a cat that peed on the walls haha! Anyway, this discussion is a little old so I've had her now for 3 months. She already was litter trained and hasn't gone anywhere but her box. Plus, I own the furniture and curtains. I understand why they have a deposit, but I guess it seems to make more sense to me to charge for any damage that did occur when the lease is up, not for damage that may or may not occur. My mom watches her when we go out of town :) She wants to keep her haha

Molly i have stuck my foot in my mouth so many times i cannot even remember..I have walked right into tight corners and was unable to excape..I think we do this because our heart is bigger than our senses at times..We see something and we want to fix it and before its over we end up in a bind..At least your heart was in the right place..It is very expensive to own animals.I have a dog,cat and a parrot named "Molly" and a parakeet named teety..I am always having to buy food, treats, litter, bird seed and treats..Then you have to get them shots and have them fixed and take them to the doctor and it cost so much.I would really love to have one of my daughters puppies, but i really cannot afford it,but i told her i wanted one but my brother wants and needs a dog ,so i will give it to him.I feel so bad for little animals that have been cast aside by people that do not deserve them..They are so dependant on us and we are their life line, but you can only afford so many....Your not a dummy you just have a big heart.
