Do you ever want to start a discussion, but don't in fear that some will down u?

I do this a lot. Sometimes I want to start a discussion in one of my interests, but once I start typing it, I start to think...what will people say? How will they down me? Will they lecture me and start a huge debate?... So I don't write them. For example, I'd like to write about marijuana, but I just KNOW I will get tons of responses telling me,' Oh marijuana is bad for you, marijuana is illegal, this, that, etc." There are many discussions I have let slide by because of the fear of a debate they will cause. Another discussion that starts debates is abortion, even religion. People are so stuck in their ways, that they don't have an open mind to others beleifs, so I have found it best to just avoid them. I only rarelly write these types of discussions. So, how about you? Do you ever feel you want to start a discussion, but don't in fear others will down you, or start a huge debate, which soon leads to the whole discussion being deleted? Tell all!

I know what you mean.Im new here at mylot and im learning that you have to be careful of what you put.So i sit and ideas come in my head and then i say..oh better watch that one or no better not because it will get turned into something else that wasnt even the topic. But now im starting to think...what the heck,i dont have alot of pennies to loose so lets go for it!So from now on whatever comes in my mind, shes coming out through my fingers because no one knows me,saw me,i have no friends so far and there halfway around the world,as if im going to meet them.I would like to know how these stupid keys work for expressing myself cause im getting frustrated.Well i hope to talk to you in another discussion you started soon because you seem down to earth and easy going.Ta,ta for now.

you have a great attitude. We should be expressing who we are and what we think here freely....and respectfully. I have seen topics like abortion and religion get out of control. I still speak my thoughts and am very open to understanding why someone would not agree with me...they haven't lived my life nor I theirs. There is no need to put anyone down yet it does happen.

I have never afraid to start off any discussion as I believe that what ever I write is my personal opinion and view of things. Those who do not like what they see can always close it up and move to the next discussion. We just would not be able to satisfy everybody no matter what we do so what we can do is "just do it!"

Hiya jennifer and i know what you mean exactly...there was a time t hat i was afraid to post those kind of topics, because there are always those people that have to explode instead of just explaining there views..but now i have been here awhile and i say hell with it..there will always be those people..and i just read what they say and give them there posittive rating unless they break the mylot rules..and move on..i dont even try to talk to them..because only a fight will break out..so just ignore them them hun..and blow them off..have a good one:)

I have a list of about a hundred topics I'd love to start but I don't specifically for the reasons you stated. I can't afford to get upset about things on here, it aggravates my Fibromyalgia to get stressed out so I just won't do it. I try to avoid any controversial discussions for that reason also. It's a shame too because I love to debate but I don't like to fight. I refuse to bash, name call or berate someone else just because their opinion is different than mine. I think that a bit juvenile. I'm almost 50 yrs old and entirely too old to play high school games.

I do sometimes, cos I would rather talked about something that will usually attract positive feedbacks, rather than negative ones. Some negative ones are really serious and "scary", thus, I will avoid topics that will give others a chance to put myself down. I always think twice before starting a discussion. But if any discussion invites a debate it is good because it may bring more credits to you.At times it is fun to see how people are struck to their points and blind.

i haven't had that kind of experience yet. if i start a discussion which is some kind of a social issue, i try to write it as objective as possible.. meaning i don't want to sound bias in my discussion.. if i have an opinion to make, i literally write "in my opinion" or "as for me"... i make it a point that if people will read my discussion, they will be encouraged to say their own point of view without really being judgmental.. well, you should write what's on your mind and not hold those topics back in your mind.. just as long as it follows the rules in posting discussions here in mylot.. good luck!

I know how you feel, but if everyone felt like this there would be no myLot. Sometimes I get thinking like this but I usually tone it down some and let it happen.Actually its good to start a Good Hot discussion. MyLot doesn't mind. AS long as you don't get upset, and can remain civil. I feel strongly about religion, and have to consciously get hold of myself when i'm responding to that subject. So go ahead and let it all Hang out! You will be glad you did.

Yes, I do worry about others reactions and response. I worry that I will offend or worse...no one will respond. I think long and hard before I do take the initiative. Usually I end up thinking...oh what the heck...how bad can it be? You have to kind of Psych yourself into accepting those that will be very opposing of what you think and accept their thoughts for what they are. With any sort of luck we find many that are accepting of us regardless of our differences. And those that don't...well they have a long ways to go. We should just understand that they don't understand. I find I tend to learn more about myself when and if I get worked up or feel a reaction to someone who disagrees with me. it is all a good thing. What I tend to struggle with the most is if someone is very rude and tries to make me feel smaller than them simply because my ways and thoughts don't match mine. none of us are perfect and no one deserves to be belittled.
