Do you believe in "leaving a baby to cry"?

I've met many people, most of whom are middle aged, and they believe that it's good to leave a baby to cry for a while before you tend to them. I'm talking about infant babies, not toddlers. Babies "CRY" for a reason. It's the only way they can communicate their needs. They don't just cry for the hell of it.

Good one, LOL :D Although i don't think i could even do it whether the child's mine or not. My heart breaks when a baby cries and it's needs are not being met.

I always heard people say you should leave the baby to cry for a little bit, and then each time let them cry just a little longer. I never could do that. when my kids cry I always had to go get them. I would feel to bad if I didn't. I remember when one of my son's was in the hospital when he was really little, I had to leave to go check on the kids and get things ok at home and when I got back my son was screaming so bad. I was so mad that the nurses were just standing around at the desk and not doing anything.. they seen me coming and just gave a look like "uh oh", I hurried and went and grabbed him and then a few minutes later someone came and apologised and swore that they were on their way in there when I came (yeah right).. anyways, yeah I agree, I do not like when people just let the babies cry..

I'm like you. Our babies cry because they want or need something, and it's our job to meet their needs. It's not our job to let them suffer.

People have told me many times that I should let my baby cry for sometime because "it is good for them". But I can never leave my baby to cry without tending to him. Everytime I hear him cry I always rush to his side immediately to see if anything is wrong or if he needs something. I cannot stand hearing him cry even for a while. It breaks my heart.

I guess those middle-aged people are followers of the 'delay of gratification' idea, or they just believe that that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger. I think it's just absurd to let a baby cry. Their voice is the only thing they have in what they perceive to be a bewildering universe. Tell those people to put off their visit to the dentist next time their teeth hurt, that'll teach them.

Babies cry for a reason. I think it's ok that they cry but as long as we meet their needs and find out why they are crying.

I agreed with them. From the baby's growth development as to increase baby's abdomen capability. Crying that showed that baby interact and responsiveness. If your baby don't cry for 10 days, something bad happening to your baby's nerves functions.

Yes, but as long as we find out why the baby is crying and not just leave them to cry.
