Can you suggest an alternative to Microsoft Word processing program?

I've been using the Windows based programs for years, but one of my least favorite programs happens to be the Microsoft Works Word processing program. It's just too bulky to use and always freezes up my computer everytime it comes up. And, I can't make it hyperlink words properly. And, it's a little outdated as well. Could anyone suggest an alternative program that works for both word processing and maybe some light html as well? Possibly a free or cheap word processing software program that would be compatible with the Windows XP computer? Would appreciate suggestions. Thanks!

Open Office! It's free and I haven't made a better switch! Except when I switched from Microsoft Vista to Ubuntu!

propose you to use open office 2.0 as this is open source and free software.although not so user friendly but it is almost the same features with ms office. http://ahtim-theblogger.blogspot.com
