Hello Mylotters, August is one of the longest months, and here in the USA we have no national holiday during August. If you live in another country, do you have any national holidays in August? If so, what holiday do you celebrate, and how do you celebrate? If you live in the USA, how do you break up this long month? Do you plan for Labor Day next month? Or maybe just weekend Bar-B-Q's? Birthdays? What do you celebrate in August? Thanks for sharing your thoughts about August celebrations!

9 August is Singapore's National Day. It is a public holiday. For school students, 10 August is an additional holiday as some schools participate in the mass displays at the national celerbation. As such, many took the opportunity to take leave to have long weekend from Thursday to Sunday.

Hello Whyaskq, Nice to visit with you again! By Singapore's National Day, do you mean a founding day or independence celebration? If so, does Singapore have parades and fireworks? Or how is the holiday typically celebrated? So, did you do anything special over the holiday? Were you able to take the long holiday weekend?

Yup, it is the day Singapore celebrate 42 years of independence. Typically, there is a mass performance on the evening of 9 Aug. Preparations are made months before involving organisations, institutions and schools where participants put up mass displays. The grand finale is the fireworks and I believe the party continues. This year is special as it is held at a newly built temporarily stadium at Marina Bay. Tickets to watch the performance are free and are limited by the capacity of the stadium. However, the performance is telecast live over national broadcasting stations. While 9 Aug is the special day, celebrations start from July. There are many activities for Singaporeans, permanent residents and guests of Singapore. See http://www.ndp.org.sg/home.html

Hi ladyluna, In the month of August, Singapore celebrates its independence from Malaysia on 9th August. For this significant day, it is a public holiday for the whole country and there will be a parade on this day.

Hello Titaniumsoul, I'm sorry that I missed that you had responded to this question. I haven't been on-line much lately. You do have my sincerest apologies! So, did you go to the parade? How else did you celebrate? Thanks for sharing Titaniumsoul!

Hello Titaniumsoul, Well that is interesting! A lottery for the tickets to attend the festivities. Hmmm, I'll bet that really generates some excitement around the holiday!

If you have read Whyaskq's response, my response is needless to say. In addition, if I were to participate in the "live" parade, I need to order the tickets and wait for the call because lots and lots of people are trying to get hold of it. The government receives responses and create a lucky draw, therefore whoever was lucky, he/she will be entitled to the tickets.

We celebrate our independence day in this month on 15th of August every year. Besides this Raksha Bandhan is also celebrated on the full-moon day that comes in this month. Both the above days are holidays.

Hello Mitraa, Thanks for sharing India's August celebrations. I'm not familiar with Raksha Bandhan, but I can always look it up. Instead of asking you to expound, I will ask how you spent your Independence Day, and how you will celebrate Raksha Bandhan.

Flag - Indian Flag
I live in India. Our Independence day is on 15th August and we celebrate this day by hoisting flags at various places. We give candys to all the people at the place of flag hoisting.

Hello Iinvention, Greetings to another of our Indian Members. Thanks so much for explaining your tradition of the raising of your National Flag. Do your Independence Day celebrations also have parades, or re-enactment festivities? I will admit that I'm very curious about the candies distributed at the Flag Raising Ceremonies. Any particular type of candy, or just yummies in general.

Hello Kitkat1, I did notice a notation on my calendar for "Civic Holiday - Canada", on the 6th of this month. If I might inquire, what exactly is "Civic Holiday"? And, was it ever celebrated, in a grand fashion? Oh, and let's not forget about a resounding chorus of "Happy Birthday to Kitkat, happy birthday to Kitkat. Happy Birthday dear Kitkat ... happy birthday to you! And many more! If I could have inserted little musical notes, I would have. Anyway, whether it has already passed, or it yet to be celebrated ... may this month usher in your happiest year ever!

Hello Bharatibajaj, Hearty Congratulations to you and all of our Indian Members, on your nation's 60th anniversary! It sounds as though your son's school festival was wonderful. I don't know how old your son is, but I wonder if he participated as any special character, or gave any speeches? Go ahead and brag if you'd like. I love to learn about different cultural traditions. Thanks for providing the link, and explaining all the celebrations your nation will enjoy this month. It sounds like you'll be very busy this August. Enjoy!

Do you mean August has more than 31 days? Cool. I didn't know they changed it. Why do we need holidays to celebrate? Everyday is a celebration. I am celebrating the arrival of fall and pleasant weather. But my vote goes for October becoming the longest month...say like 37 days or 40 days long? Subtracting a few from January and February is fine with me. Tomorrow is a special day for me because I am starting my journey toward financial independence.

Hello Sigma, Nice to visit with you again! Hmmm, I don't think we can change the number of days in August. However, I agree with you that we can certainly alter our perception, so as to make more everyday events more of a celebration. Good thinking, my friend! I'm envious that you are already beginning to get a bit of fall like weather. It's still very hot down here. Oh, and good luck on tomorrow. May it mark a shiny, bright & new beginning for you.

Well here in Spain, many villages celebrate their local holidays in August. Apart from that, there's a national holiday on August 15th, which is the Immaculate Conception. During the summer, if you go from village to village, it's easy to find one that is celebrating their local holidays, usually dedicated to a certain saint.

Hello LightninStrike, Nice to visit with you again, as well. Ah yes, I seem to recall that many parts of Spain, and I believe France as well, regularly celebrate the Feast Days of Patron Saints. Patron Saint Days never really took off here in the USA, except St. Patrick's Day. So, I had forgotten about this lovely tradition. Thanks for the reminder!

I celebrate three birthdays in August. My fiancee's is the 9th as well as one of my good friends, and my best friend's birthday is on the 27th. Other than that...not too much going on besides the weekend cookouts..I am one of those to take full advantage of the weather. I wanted to go on a camping trip but that isn't happening this month...lol!

Hi ladyluna; You gave us SEVEN(7) question marks to make answers. "ANY NATIONAL DAY IN AUGUST?. Pretty sure, YES. "IF SO, WHAT HOLIDAY YOU CELEBRATE?" Malaysia will be celebrating its Independence Day on August 31, 2007. And this is for the 50th. of celebration. And most corporate companies organizing a lot of contests related to its commemoration with rewarding prizes. "IF YOU LIVE IN USA, HOW DO YOU BREAK UP THIS LONG MONTH?" I will visit my best friend C.Liane Luini at 4102, Landover Hills, MD USA 20784-2624. Touring Baltimore City and the beaches. "DO YOU PLAN FOR LABOR DAY NEXT MONTH?" And again sure, YES. For Hollywood CA. "OR WEEKEND BAR-B-Q's" nops. "BIRTHDAY?" Nops, because my birthday will be on November 17. "WHAT DO YOU CELEBRATE IN AUGUST?" My friend's birthday party.

Hello Michaeldadona, Thank you for being so thorough. I presented a variety of options, not so much to receive an answer about each. Rather, to give the respondents alternatives from which to choose. However, you're commitment to thoroughness is appreciated. Oh my, it sounds like Malaysian companies really make an effort to participate in the celebration of Malaysia's Independence. It rather sounds like it is quite a celebration. So, you'll be visiting both Maryland and California on your vacation? Geesh, you'll probably need a vacation from your vacation. An intercoastal holiday sounds like great fun, albeit somewhat exhausting. Have a super time! Happy Birthday to your friend. And, to you in a few months. Incidentally, you share a birthday with my grandmother. So, when 11/17 arrives, I'll think of you as I extend birthday wishes for my grandmother. Thanks for your response Michaeldadona.
