Does your shower pressure go down when someone uses a sink or flushes a toilet?

Turn off the sink! - This is what happens when someone in my house turns on a sink or flushes a toilet when I am in the shower. Or I get scalded or frozen! ACK!

I was taking a shower today and suddenly, it was a freezing cold dribble. "Turn off the sink!!!!" I screamed to no one in particular. Seconds later, the shower water was back. I hate when I am in the shower and someone uses a sink or, worse, if they flush a toilet. The water just dies and I either end upp with cold or scalding water dribbling on me. Is it my old house or a common thing? I also HATE that every time I want to take a hot bath, there is no hot water. No matter when, it cuts out after about a minute. Talk about frustrating. Anyway, does anyone else get scalded or frozen or lose their shower pressure when someone else uses the water?

The flow of water depends on the pressure within the pipes. So when another outlet is drawing water from it at the same time the interior pressure will decrease considerably. This is then will definitely cause the water to be limited and flow slower. I did experience this several times, worse still if during the moment I had applied lots of shampoo on my body. To avoid this unpleasant situation I always remind all the members of my family try not to use other taps while I am showering.

No it's not just your house. My husband has been known to do that to me too when I'm in the shower, and yes I do yell at him. I can hear him laughing when he says "Sorry". I know he's not sorry at all, he thought it was funny for me to get a cold thrill in the shower...LOL

Haha, well at least I am not alone. It seems everyone needs to use the water or flush a toilet the minute I step into the shower. I just know they're laughing at my screaming! lol. Thanks for the reply!

Yes, most definitely. Only the hot water though. As in when I am in the shower, and someone is using the sink, then the water would turn cold whenever the hot water was being used. But nothing changes when only cold water is used. And also the toilet doesn't seem to affect the pressure either.

I wonder why it is only the hot water? Here, if someone flushes a toilet, we lose pressure so much that the shower is just a drizzle. I hate it. Now I take bubble baths in the middle of the night when everyone is asleep. If I can get enough hot water, I'm good to go!

Yes when someone flushes or use water it affects the shower. Everytime I take a bath i make sure no one will use the sink or toilet.

I try but, with two sons and a husband around, it is bound to happen. I guess I am not alone in losing all my water pressure! I feel better about that. lol.

It use to until I replaced the hot water tank with a newer model. No problems since then. 7

I've offered before to take care of that and to check up on the furnace. Let me know when you want me to come on over. 7

Thankfully, no. Although I loved my parents' house built in 1880 for it's Victorian charm and uniqueness, I hated that you couldn't even look at the faucet without scalding or freezing the person who was currently showering. I loved that house but I vowed that I would never buy an old house like that where you could only do one water related activity at a time so I always buy new or newer homes. To this day when I go home for a visit I still get yelled at for flushing the toilet at the wrong time as I totally forget that that cannot be done in their house. I hate it going to the bathroom and having to leave the room without flushing until the person in the shower is done. Eww.

Yeah, nasty. I feel like I am living in the 50's in this old house. Everything goes wrong. As you know, I can't even get bubbles for a bubble bath and still don't know why. I have definite water issues in this place! lol. Wow, 148 posts! I have to go follow you around and see what you're talking about. I can't find any beauty people! No LUSHies! I think we better start a cult! Thanks for the reply and boy did I go off topic!

This is something that seems to vary from house to house. In one place, it was pretty bad. In another one, there was a noticeable difference, but it was tolerable. In the place I am in now, there is very little notice, only when you expect it it seems. From what I understand, it does depend on how thick the water pipes are. The thicker the pipes, & the more water that can flow through them, the less noticebale this change is when someone turns water on or off.

Makes sense. We must have pipes the size of straws. Ha! It's an old house built in the 50's and we should redo the plumbing with huge pipes and a massive hot water heater. Thanks for the reply!

Hi there! Yeah, I have been suffering in this house for years. I also have problems getting enough hot water for a bath when I want it. I hate when the water turns cold halfway through a bath or shower. Ugh. Thanks for the reply.

Certainly, because water pressure gets divided when at a time two or more outlets are on.If the hot water system is pressure sensitive it will not function at lower pressure. Always advisable for hot water system pressure setting OR to make hot water direct connection.

I wish I knew how to make a hot water direct connection. If I suffer through another cool bath when I want a hot one, I will scream! Thanks for the reply!

My pressure goes down. I normally tell the folks I am going to take a shower so they can hold off from doing anything that will decrease the flow of water.

I feel so much better! I thought I was the only one who suffered. This morning, I mistakenly turned on the water while my husband was in the shower and the water turned freezing. He yelled to shut the water off and I did, obviously, but had to laugh because it happens to me so often. Thanks for the reply.

I've been hearing that sense I was a little girl also. my mother felt in the world there was no such thing as friends that God was your only friend and others around who were not family where only associates but I've food that not to be true as you there has been those in my family who has proven themselves to be dishonest and a very close friend of mine I have worthy of being more than just water but I conclude her to be my blood.

I suggest that you use small tub and basin when taking a bath instead of the shower. You also can save water. A big pail of water will be enough for a good bath. As to hot water, put the hot water in the basis with tap water and thats your water for your bath. You will above freezing and you will not have no problem using warm water. Happy bathing.

I think you should make the water system repaired instead of complaining ,
