School Attire, SWEATPANTS?

Do you think college should, or does, have an unspoken rule about attire? I've been in the arguement plenty of times that sweatpants are not suitable for college nor are a lot of things I see my fellow peers wearing. It looks sloopy and is uncalled for. This is professional setting and a respect issue. Most individuals, weither they want to admit it or not, judge on appearance so why is a professor any different? No one is saying to get dressed up like you're going to a photoshoot but look half decent. I actually had another student come up to me and say I dressed better than the majority of kids at my school. What do I wear? Jeans and shirts, which are just as comfy.

I have to respectfully disagree with you. College is a place where you go to learn; I mean, we are paying, in some cases, thousands of dollars a year to attend these places of higher institution, I think that clothing should be the least of our worries. I agree that clothing that is offensive or bad taste should be banned, but I don't think it should go to sweatpants or, in my case, pajama bottoms and a t-shirt. Personally, I think that you have a point with your argument to some level but it really just depends on the student. I will admit, there have been times that I have gone to class in nothing more than pajama bottoms and a t-shirt I pulled out of my dormroom closet. I think that if you are being judged on your clothing, anyways, then that's the issue that a professor or someone else would have to deal with. I'd take a shower, but I wanted to be comfortable in class, I learn better that way. I mean, I graduated, got my degree, I don't think it hindered my learning or my ability to stay focused in class. That's what it should be all about, right? I guess what I am saying is that it's the content of the student within, not the clothing outside. If someone is learning, why should we interfere with clothing. There are other issues out there that seem to be more pressing than why I shouldn't wear my Scooby Doo pajamas to class.

I feel that sweatpants ARE suitable for a college environment. We work so hard to get good grades and to complete a bachelor's degree so why would it be bad to show up in sweats? Many students have sports practice right after anyway. Now if you were going to Kathryn Gibbs where there aren't any extra cirriculum activities and it's not a "university" atmosphere than no sweats wouldn't be appropriate.

colleges should not have rules about attire, well to some limit you cant have someone walk in with there things hanging out but sweatpants are definitely fine. they are comfortable, but it does depend what college. if your law student definitely where a suit and tie not sweatpants. i would have to say that certain colleges should have attire rules.

I personally don't see a problem with it, as long as they're clean. For most people, college isn't an easy experience. It's hard work, if allowing them to dress comfortably helps them to study better, I'm all for it. Jeans are not "just as comfy" as sweatpants for everyone. I'm not a big fan of jeans. I own 2 pairs and they've been worn maybe a dozen time total in the past 3 years. I just don't think they're very comfy at all.
