Songwriting/Poetry- Do you write? Is there anyone's writing that you love?

I've been writing songs for about 7 years now. It's something that I love to do and recently I've gotten the chance to write with a few professionals. I write and sing country music mainly - modern country music. Is there anyone out there who writes as well? What styles do you write? Poetry or songs? Is there anyone's songs or poetry you admire? I'd love to hear from you!

Hey Dana. =] I absolutely love the writing of yours that I've read so far. You know that song you sent to Alex and I? Have you finished it yet? Anyway, yes I write poetry, not so much lyrics... Even though I suppose lyrics are poetry, but because I never intend to put them to music...... I dunno, that makes sense, right? My poetic style is always changing, as far as the content goes. Some of my poems are about my experiences, some are about things I notice, my thoughts, nature and so on. I generally try to be descriptive, but also only imply things, so that people can derive their own meaning from my writing. I think interpretation is very important in literature, songs etc. =]

Thank you :) I think it's finished... I don't know that it's changed much if at all since you and Alex read it, but I sung it in a competition recently and did pretty well. I really love your poetry. Especially the Phoenix one. I know what you mean about interpretation. I recently read a Shakespeare play for the first time and now I really appreciate poetic literature and how it could go either way in meaning. I just wish my school had literature as a senior subject...

Yeah, schools are funny like that. Give you a taste of it and then make sure you have to do it at uni or in your own time. it's just not nice =P at my school they don't exactly have it as a subject, but i know the teachers I have will be great. I recently borrowed a book from my english teacher called the Metaphysical Poets. it's all poetry from the 14th or so Century onwards and is beautiful! I might have to start a discussion on it at some time, as a matter of fact. =] I'm so glad that you like that poem of mine, it's a real favourite. I posted it on here if you haven't seen/commented it yet =] And grats on your competition!

Yeah, I'm not sure I'm dedicated enough to take it to uni level. Not sure if I'll even go to uni yet... Sounds like it would be a good book to get your hands on. My only problem with reading poetry from so long ago is it takes me forever to understand how the language works... After that it's really easy to appreciate though. I'll see if I can find the poem on here and read it... again. lol

I've been writing gibberish since... I could write? If and when I write these days it's a short poem... Perhaps a pun... nothing more eccentric... *hears at you from me!*

I don't write songs but from time to time I do try to write poems. Heh, most times the things don't even rhyme, but I like trying them out anyways.

Lol not all poems have to rhyme. Although often there is more challenge in writing ones that do. The great thing about songs is the words don't have to rhyme completely for it to sound good. Sometimes the same vowel sound is enough. And the other thing I love about song is I can perform them to people :) thanks for your comment

I'm afraid I haven't heard of most of them. The exception is celine dion of course. I'm starting to get a bit more known in australian Country, but I'm still really young so it's hard to really go for it at the moment. Keep writing though. It's worth it :)

I do write poetry. And I love to sing but I could never remember what I come up with once I start writing a song. I dont know how to really write music. I dont even know how to read music. Whats the trick? Can I teach myself how to read and write music. I want to eventually play the piano but... i just dont have the time right now in my life.

of course you can learn to read/write music! If you want to learn piano I'd suggest buying a couple of theory books to try and get the general idea what it's about. It takes a lot of practise and comittment to learn to read it, but if you keep at it you'll be able to sightread eventually. I've never been comitted enough to learn, since i play guitar, I don't really need it. I can just come up with melodies from experimenting and then remember them. I don't write it out like classical artists would. I think it would be a little more difficult to do that with a piano though.. Hopefully I've helped somehow... Dana
