What strange obsessions did you have as a child?

I had a think where I had to back-track everywhere I went. I imagined I was pulling an invisible string, so I had to always go back the way I came. If I turned in a circle 8 times, I had to 'un-wind' 8 times as well. If I walked one way around the kitchen table, I had to walk back that way. Now this wasn't so obsessive that I made my parents drive back the way they came when we were out, nor did I push this on anyone else. It was just something that I always paid attention to and tried to make sure I un'did any steps I made. What about you?

If i don't know better, i would think that you have a slight obsessive compulsive tendency. :) When I was young I used to believe that aliens abduct people and they replace them with a lookalike. What I would do is ask my parents or cousins every time they come home random questions about me or them just to make sure they are really them or just aliens. LOL.

Did you watch a lot of Sci Fi as a kid? What did your family think of all the interrogations?

I don't remember watching lots of Sci-Fi.. i wasn't really a star trek fan. I don't even remember where I got the idea. I was just paranoid about everything that my family got used to it. Good thing I didn't turn out to be paranoid now too. :)

My weirdest obsession would be eating tea leaf after it had been in boiling water to make tea. My dad used to drink tea, and he would make a pot with real tea leaf. I waited for him to take the first 2 cups to drink, then I scooped out the tea leaf and chewed on them for a while. It was weird, and my dad didn't know what to say to me. He allowed me to go through this stage at my own pace. Well, I am now over that, but still I don't understand why I did it.

I would guess a tea leaf would be really bitter. Yuk!! So you aren't interested in them anymore?

I was obsessed with time. I always needed to know what time it was. I learned to tell time at age 3 and began wearing a watch so I stopped bugging my parents to tell me what it was. I still sleep with my cell phone, so I can know what time it is, in the middle of the night.

That is indeed strange, ChaJud. I would say that my strangest obsession was every time I would sit at the table to eat I had to keep my feet moving and swinging. I did this well into adulthood where I managed to tame it. Believe it or not, I have a great granddaughter now who does the same thing! Everyone in the family says she looks just like me so I got out one of my old pictures, and sure enough, she looks almost identical to me when I was three-years-old.

So were you always fidgety, or just sitting at the dinner table?

Well, I think that I am just basically a fidgety type of person. Another habit I used to have was rocking. I still find myself doing that sometimes.(:

I wouldn't call this an obsession, but it's a strange habit alright. To this very day, I still do it! I like playing with my left ear -- touching, twitching, twisting, and bending it. I've been doing this for so long that the cartilage on my left ear has become so flexible, while my right ear has not. My left ear has grown ever so slightly bigger than the right as well. I do this when I'm nervous, when I'm deep in thought, or just plain bored. It grosses some people out but I don't think I can stop it.

I always rubbed my nose so that now I have a small crease running aross it. It's interesting that you actually made your ear bigger from fiddling with it so much. Grosses some people out? I think that's a bit dramatic of them to think too much of that. If you were digging in it, then that would be gross.

sorry, i know this is an old discussion and all... but it was so interesting to see everyone's little childhood quirks that i was reminded of my own. :) when i was young, i always had this funny notion that food will re-assemble in my stomache, much like a jigsaw puzzle does. For example, if i ate a burger, i'd imagine the bread, meat patty and veggies will go back the same way as before in my tummy. lol. so i always try to finish eating everything once i start on it, which, i think, made me look kinda selfish at times. coz if i opened like a bag of chips, i'll insist on finishing up the whole pack by myself and not share one bit with others coz i don't want missing bits in my stomach. lol. no idea what i was thinking back then.

i can't stand light. from the day when i was born, until i think i was 7. my mom was shocked when she visited me for the first time @ the nursery because i had a sort-of blind fold on. she asked the nurse if i was blind or there's something wrong with my eyes. the nurse said, i won't stop crying and i won't sleep until they had turned the lights off which was impossible since it's an infant nursery. so they had to put a blindfold on me. there was also an instant when i was 4 (this was one of my first memories) when i hid and fell asleep inside the closet and got my parents worried sick. they were looking for me to the extent of calling the police thinking i was kidnapped. I JUST CAN'T STAND LIGHT THEN.
