Does everyone in the US know this?At midnight on February 17, 2009, federal law requires that all full-power television broadcast stations stop broadcasting in analog format and broadcast only in digital format. That means if you don't have a digital TV you'll have to get a digital tuner to hook up to your TV and your antennea. I think I have that right. We don't have any digital TVs, or DTVs. We do have satellite, which is digital, and I think all the cable companies are, too. But we have one regular TV in the kitchen that we use when the satellite is out. Now we'll have to either buy a new TV or a tuner so it will work. We'll get a lot more channels, but what a hassle!

ive come across a few discussions about this on mylot. but have yet to hear or read any official announcement on the news etc. i wonder why. i personally think that the whole idea sucks! there are a large number of senior citizens in my area that only get tv thru the antenna, and on a very limited monthly budget there is no way they can afford cable or satellite. so they will be completly without any form of entertainment. ive heard on another discussion that the government is going to give every household (that meets criteria im sure) a $40 certificate in order to get the cable box..which is fine and dandy..but how about the monthly bill thereafter?! whats the point of being able to get the damn box "free" if you cant keep up the service anyways? stupid stupid..and i think if all this is in fact true..that the gov. and the cable companies must seriously be in league for this to come about. how could they NOT be?!

I have seen several official announcements. And the government is going to give vouchers. Once you by the tuner, that's all there is to it. It is simply an interface between the antennae and the TV, not a service that you have to subscribe to. I just think it's stupid to mandate this. But then the government is going to 'sell' the unused airwaves. Making money all around, just not for us, the poor consumer!
