I have begun a fairly new job where I work the graveyard shift of 11p.m. to 7a.m.....many mornings I am exhausted and still have to get the kids to school...LOL But on the weekend days...I am still unable to come home and go straight to bed...no matter how tired I am ....I just can not seem to go to sleep immediately... This morning, I am sitting here so tired...and yawning...but am unable to go rest just yet....so I wondered how others deal with this.... Could you go straight to bed upon arriving home from work without sitting there for awhile and unwinding somewhat??? OR do you hit the bed as soon as you get home???

i would love to come home, take off my shoes and relax!! yet that is never the case. with a man and three kids, plus a dog and my brothers little girl now, i never ever ever get to do that. after leaving my house at 7 in the morning and getting home at 7 at nite. i have to start dinner, make sure things get cleaned up. give the baby a bath, and if i am really lucky i get to bed at about 11. I worked the grave yard shift before and that didn't work for me because i never got any sleep! good luck to you girl

I dont do that, going to bed after arriving from work i mean. Even how tired I feel, I always need to do something. I clean up myself first, eat if I'm hungry since I can sleep with an empty stomach, or watch anything from the TV.

I always need time to wind down when I return from work and certainly something to eat, as I feel too drained to sleep but need some quality time to 'relax' either watching tv, comedy is ideal to unwind, a nice cup of hot chocolate and some music. Even if it's only an hour or so.

I usually have to wind down first, having something to eat, watch a bit of tele or just relax, take a shower then hop into bed. I don't often fall asleep right away so its back to watching tv or reading a book. The only time i come home after an exhausting day is if I have been exercising i.e like playing a couple hours of tennis, then i shower, eat and then sleep!

Not really I go straight to bed. I generally tke sme rest just relaxing on sofa and chang dreses, taking some snacks and watching TV or just doing nothing, for 45 minutes to an hour and then start the work if i have t dno anything a nd finish my main works, eat the lunch or dinner, may be littl early than usual and finally go to bed little early. but if i go to bed in the begining then i wont be able to get up for the rest of the work or food

Nope, I can't go and hit the bed right after coming home from work no matter how tired I am. I have to take a rest first and unwind by watching the television. Then I have to take a bath before I hit the sack, make me sleep more better. :-)

I used to work where I would work til one in the morning but wouldn't get home til about two . I was never able to come home and go straight to bed as I had to unwind . I would usually have something to eat and then jump online for a bit as well . No matter how tired I was I wouldn't be able to fall asleep until I was home for a bit . Even now , months after I no longer work this job , I still find it hard to get to sleep at a normal hour as I was so used to being up so late that I still find it hard to get to sleep at a decent hour . I have tried to get to bed a little earlier each night but somehow still always revert back to the late night hours .

Growing up, my dad worked 8 hour swing...8am-4pm, 4pm-midnight, midnight-8 am. I've worked 2nd...4pm-midnight. My s/o has done straight 11pm-7am and is on 12 hour swing now...7pm-7am or 7am-7pm. My mom is also making the switch to straight nights from on call at a personal care home.... For the most part night shift was always treated the same as day shift hours would be. Meaning when someone works days and gets home at 4pm-5pm, they don't go straight to bed right away either. With my s/o, he would take the kid(s) to school and then go to bed around 10-11am and sleep until evening. My mom likes to go to bed around 9am, wake up between 2-3pm and then catch a nap around 8pm. I can't honestly say what my dad did because we were already at school by the time he got home. I do know that once you find a routine that works for you, you're body will adjust. It just takes a few weeks. You can forget about having normal hours on your days off though. You can try to force yourself to "turn around" but that will leave you feeling more tired and cranky...trust me, my s/o HAS to turn around several times a month....it's great to get overtime checks in between the regular twice a month checks and the extra $4000+ a year they bring in is necessary BUT...the cost of swing shift relationship-wise has been far greater...So just be careful about getting your sleep and make sure everyone understands that daytime is your night time. The thing my s/o and mom both struggle with is people thinking that they're free to do whatever during the day since they're home instead of realizing that they need to be sleeping.

I usually need to unwind too! I sometimes work days, sometimes graveyard shift. And seems like my sleep gets all messed up from working late nights. But then, there's the night time differential, which sometimes makes it worth my time.

No, these days I don't anymore do that...I change my clothes, and sometimes do mylotting at once...or do household chores like watering the plants, cleaning the yard since I don't have time in the morning...but when I'm really tired, I change my clothes and rest first....

I worked the Graveyard shift for 12 years and farmed at home too. I'd get home at 7.30 am and breakfast would be hot on the table. Then my wife would lock the door and we both hit the bed. This is the best way to unwind, I'd recommend it to everybody. I never had any trouble sleeping and often would not know when she got up. I'd sleep the sleep of the innocent until 1 pm, then I'd get up and go to work on the farm.

When I was still working as a nurse, I preferred the 3-11 shift. Often I would not get home until around 1am. I would get something to eat, watch some TV, read emails, or maybe do some housework. I always looked at it just the same as if I had just gotten home from a 9-5. Its the end of the work day but I still have house work and other thingsto take care of. Then I would wind down by reading in bed. Even if I was completely exhausted I just could not come home and go straight to bed.

Psychologically no one can go to bed directly after coming home from work. The body and the mind searches for relaxation and rest. The brain is still active but the mind craves for rest. So after a while, when the tension and pressure has reduced, we'll start feeling sleepy automatically.

I'm retired now and have been since 1998 BUT when I did work there was no way I could just go to bed whne I got home...I worked nights (6pm-2am) and it took me a good 45 mins to get home (I worked out of time)...I'd get home, send the sitter home, have a shower then I had to have my dinner, unwind and THEN I'd go to bed..I didnt always eat dinner mind you but I ALWAYS had to either have a shower or bath (I worked in a bar so it was super smokey but also being on stage numerous times a night and doin table dances etc goin to bed WITHOUT showering just disgusted me so that never happened)

I can't come home and go straight to sleep. I could've been sleepy at work and dozing off, but as soon as I get in the car and drive home and get into my apartment. It seems like i'm wide awake and it takes me an hour or two before I wind down again. I think alot of times it just the fact that I be ready to get off work and might be bored so it will make me sleepy, but once I'm home I can do what I want and don't have to be confined for 8 hours.
