Women, do you hate it when men you don't know call you sweetheart?

I do. Men listen up. Sweetheart, baby, darling: these words should be reserved for women you actually have a relationship with. I find guys who casually call any woman these names as boorish, disrespectful, and sexist. Some guys claim it's just a bad habit, that they don't mean much by it. I believe that this is their subconscious attempt to "put that woman in place." Am I overreacting here? Women, men share your thoughts.

may be ur right at some context as this words r only used by the persons who have some relationship with u . but secondly some times they pass on such an complement to impress us without knowing any meaning to it.

There are much better ways to compliment a woman than this way I feel. Some do this from habit I think as that's the way they grew up seeing and hearing this from the men around them as kids. Thanks also. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Being a man I can honestly say that I do not call any woman other than my wife and sometimes my daughter any type of romantic name. I finds it very disturbing the amount of men that do this and then get upset if the woman doesn't like it. Women are women and not our sweethearts. Anyhow that's my take on this. Men please respect the women better. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

You are not overreacting one single bit!!! I hate it when guys do this to me, and I correct them everytime. If they want to address me, they can atleast ask my name. I will tell them my name. I have a name so that they can address me properly.

In the southeastern part of the US this is VERY common. In fact I would be wary of a guy that didn't talk like that because it would then mean he was disrespectful. I'm a female and even do this. Its like calling your aunt or uncle, Aunt Sue or Uncle Bob. Its all a respect thing. In other parts of the US I think it is sexest because its done as a smart-alecy thing. When vacationing outside of the south if I hear a man say this I may tend to walk on or even leave completely because I wonder if he's just a dirty old man.

I didn't realize that this was a custom in the South. I'll keep this in mind.

This kind of thing drives me up the wall, I work in an auto parts store, unfortunately I am the only female on the staff right now, the guys I work with are cool, and do not do this sort of thing, but the customers, the male ones any way drive me nuts, they call me sweetheart, babe, darling and you name it I have been referred to by it. I have a name, and it is clearly displayed on my name tag which I am required to wear and it is in very, very bold lettering. If these men cannot read, ok, but I really do not believe there are that many illiterate men in this day and age. Come on guys of the world. Have a little respect and self dignity.
