Is there a trick to starting GOOD discussions?

I have tried several times to start discussions and usually don't get much in the way of responses. Even when the discussion is on a popular topic. What I am wondering is if there is a trick to starting discussions that get good responses? Could anyone give me any suggestions as to what makes a good discussion, and how to improve my responses?

I think sometimes it is just a matter of timing. If no one sees your discussion who might be interested in your topic it doesn't take long for a discussion to get lost amongst all the other discussions. Always make sure you place it under the right topic so those who search for certain topics will find it.

That is a good point. Sometimes I am not sure where to start a discussion. I usually try to start it in the right thread, but don't always manage to do so.

I think the trick is to share something interesting about yourself. Not whether you like blue cheese or have brown eyes, but something much more personal, an event that changed you or an embarrassing experience, a weakness you have, anything that makes you that little bit more human to the people reading the question. They will respond if it touches them - we share a common humanity and, if it's happened to you, someone else out there will know what it feels like and be dying to talk about it. Not that I would ever do anything like that, of course. I hide behind my chameleon persona... ;)

You may be right, but I tend to try not to get too personal online. I guess it can't hurt, but then again I have always been shy!

I don't know if it is a trick but there are two things I've done since joining MyLot: When I start a discussion, it is always something that is interesting to me...in other words, I don't start a discussion just for the sake of starting one. I also include my own outlook, opinion or experience to "get the ball rolling". The other thing is I have a lot of friends here on MyLot, almost 1000. I work on answering their discussions (as long as it is something I can comment on) and I take time to leave them comments on their profiles and answer their personal messages to me. I kind of figure with that many friends my discussions will appeal to the majority of them. I don't think there is a "trick" to MyLot except to have fun and be youself. Try not to get into fights and waste your time fighting with some ppl. !!HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~
