How to choose a laptop for college?

My stepson is a senior in high school this year. For Christmas, we want to get him the perfect laptop to get him a good start in college. Any suggestions as to the best deal we can get and still get a quality product? He is planning ultimately on designing video games, but wil start out in IT, most likely. We don't want to ask him too many questions so he is surprised on Christmas. Thanks in advance for any help!!

I recommend an apple macbook pro with applecare (apple´s product care program) for all college students taht want a good long lasting computer. I recommend the laptop because college students usually find it useful to have a small and very portable computer. Apple has one of the best and easiest to use products out there. It might be slightly more expensive, but a good option to get a better deal would be to search on Apple´s applestore online under refurbished notebooks or products, where you can buy refurbished and guaranteed macbooks, ipods and iphones, among other products.
