The Best Free Anti Virus I Have Found!!

United States

When I bought my computer about 2 years ago I bought Norton along with it. I PAID FOR IT!! I was not happy with it, and to top it off they wanted me to pay money again to keep all systems working after 6 or 12 months I dont remember which. So then I was told about Avast, I was worried that because it was 100% free it might not be all that great. But to my surprise after installing it and letting it do a complete scan of my hard drive it found tons of adware and some viruses too that Norton had never warned me about, and yes I did let Norton completly scan my computer too and I happen to let it scan my hard drive the same day avast did and Avast caught lots that Norton did not. I love the fact that Avast constently updates your Virus Data Base. Within minutes of connecting to the internet, (even on dial up we have both dial up and cable connections in our home) I love that you actually are being informed of the update in info. The AIR RAID SIRENS I could live without the scare LOL but I do likethat they do so much to grab your attention and say hey there is something wrong!! I know that my opinion is 1 sided as for FREE anti virus because the fact that I never tried any other free anti virus because I have been 100% satisfied with avast so far (over 2 years now) and we have it on all our computers. So if your looking for a great FREE anti virus I would say go avast all the way. If anyone has a different opinion please share I'd love to hear what else there is out there. To download avast home edition for FREE for yourself goto: Http:/www.avast.com

That is nice to hear from you. Good for you. Actually, Avast is one of the best and free antivirus. It updates regularly. At last, you are able to choose that really makes you satisfied of using it. Actually, we need to explore various softwares and try to evaluate by ourselves if it is effective indeed. In this manner, we are able to verify the best software for our machine. One thing also, we don't have to waste money just for the sake of preventing our machine against viruses. There are some free antivirus which are very effective, and as you have mentioned, AVAST is one of the great free AV products. Have a nice day.

Thanks. I am currently using Avira AntiVir Personal Classic Edition which is one of the free AV products (AVAST, AVG, AVIRA). I think both the three are just the same. I am very much satisfied using this one and it is very light on resources. Have a great day!

I have avast on all of the computers in my house. I dont care for norton because if you dont pay for it, I believe it acts like a virus or an open door for virus' and or spyware.I could be wrong ,just my opinion.I know when I took Norton off or what ever came with the various computers and ran the Avast it found numerous things on the computers.

It should not cause you any problems at all! I too have Windows XP SP2 and all my computers run great with avast, and the best part is its free always (for home use only) I have never ran into any conflicts with it what so ever and we have used it on atleast 4 computers over the years probably more. Good Luck!

I am so glad I found this discussion. I will be getting rid of my Norton soon, as it is expired, and it always found little or nothing. I have used some other anti virus free software, but I am reading all the way through this discussion how much you like Avast and I am hoping it will resolve some of my difficulties I have had, because I go lots of places on the net, and I never know what nasty thing is lurking to come back home with me.

Yup, I also had Norton and it was scary how many nasty things Avast found that Norton did not. I hope that you try Avast and are as happy with it as I have been!

Thanks for your responce! I have heard really good things about both AVG as well as Kasperesky. I have also heard of a few people that have had AVG running and still a trogen or virus has gotten in, and they then used Avast to remove the problem. They all have recommended running avast along with AVG, just a little information I thought that I would pass along to you incase you wanted to double protect your self. but it sounds to me like AVG has proven to be great for you and Im glade to hear that! Again thanks for your responce!

thats crazy ive never had any errors but thanks for bringing this to my attention so I can keep an eye on it. Every time that I get on the internet (even with dial up) the message pops up in the right hand corner telling me that my virus data base has been updated. Sorry for your trouble but glade you found something that works for you=)

I think you're correct people in my country are using mcAfee and Avast instead of Norton so including myself .....presently i am using professional edition of McAfee antivirus and i am pretty much setisfied with that because it was recommended to me by a dealer it updates itself very often and let my pc run on moderate speed .................but he told me that norton will make my system too slow so i would not be able to do work fast ........ anyways thanks for the recommendation for Avast i a sure i will try it soon .............

Good Luck with that we had Macafee as well because it comes with comcast cable connection but we have removed it from our computers because it was slowing things down and was causing other issues as well.

i think avg or avast or even bitdefender may be good. no doubt norton n mcafee r good but they slow down the system to a great extent and so is the same with zonealarm.

I have heard about bitdefender but I beleive that it is not free, I like my free avast but I have heard the bitdefender is a really great anti virus!

I will not be able, probably, to open a new page in the discussion. Just want to support fellow PC users voting for AVG. In my previous company, IT transferred everything from Norton to AVG, and... since them I switched all my computers to AVG, and never felt sorry for this change. AVG is light-weight, reliable, user-friendly, and ...still free. Recently, one of my customers informed me that he switched from McAffe to AVG, and is sorry that he stayed with McAfee so long. Another pic, I would offer for review, is Trend Micro. I use it in the office, since it is our corporate approved software.

I would love to be able to reveiw Trend Micro however I dont beleive that it is free and I was only commenting on free programs however if it is free let me know and I will give it a try. Thanks for the info!

I always hated Norton. THanks for sharing about this one. I was skeptical when someone in my office told me. I think I will try it too. Thanks
