It is easy to start a discussion with people of the same age group but communicating with children to make them listen to you and share their feelings is an art. They are very innocent in their early years and are in the verge of knowing about the world and people. At this juncture, It's very important to guide them properly because whatever they learn whether good or bad at this age helps in their charecter development. This is the age of imitation and they try to do everything they see in others.I strongly believe that it is very difficult to teach good things and make them follow them than behaving rudely and making them arrogant. So, be very clear in your message to them and just behave with them like with any of your friends. Some important points to remember are
Always try to listen to what they wanted to say
Answer their doubts and value their opinions
Let them know that they are important to you
Appreciate their good deeds
Express your resentment for their intolerable behaviour by words and feelings alone
Allow them to be the way they want if it is not bad.

You are right. It is important to let them know that they are appreciated when they do well, but it is also important to let them know that you are the one in charge. You must let them know that you are the adult, and that will not tolerate it when they misbehave.
