Considering the constant bombardment of News, Public Service announcements and we parents;Have we freightened our children to death with regard to predators? The other night I asked my 12 yr old son to run into the grocery store and purchase some milk so that I could run in and drop off a DVD at the local BlockBuster which was right next door. He absolutely refused to do it and when I asked him why, His response was that he was afraid of a possible predator being in the store and didn't want to go in alone. Keep in mind that not only is he a Boy Scout and sleeps in the woods..He's also had 4 years of JUDO and is a second degree Brown belt. Do you find the overexposure to bad news is scaring your children?

A second degree brown belt at 12yrs old & a boyscout yet he still dosen't have the confidence that he could handle the situation? Well on further though I've seen how the boy scouts have become in my area & know how some of the martial arts schools are all about flash & show ( no real survival skills ). So those aren't necessarily great benefits. Have you actually sat him down & trained him in how to deal with these situations? I went over it with my kids myself. The bad news should be an indicator to you that the predators are there. Your sons reaction seems to show that you haven't properly prepared him to deal with both the news or the predators.

As far as his training in the Martial arts is concerned I can tell you that he's tossed me around more than once so, It isn't about all flash and show. It's about confidence which I believe has been the responsibility of myself and his mom. Being an only child I think we've been way over protective!

Well now that you've isolated one of the roots of the problem perhaps you can begin working on it. I personally feel kids shouldn't be completely "protected" by their parents. When their finally alone their shield is suddenly removed & their left completely unprepared and vulnerable. I believe parents should be more "Damage control". They'll then have the knowledge & experience to be ready when the need arises. Now back to the marital arts issue. Have you actually sat in & watched what they do on a regular basis? Do they teach real life combat skills & situations? Many schools teach techniques that are great for show or in the ring but useless on the street. You could teach a 6 yr old how to throw someone, but would they know when, where & how to use it properly? Thats the part that commonly gets left off even though its the part thats most necessary & what will instill the most confidence.

Yup, media drives a child to paranoia. That's why, every movie, they reminds every veiwer to guild a child when you are watching. Parents guide must concerned to avoid a child to be paranoid.

:S. ive never... handled anything like that with children. Most children to me, seem to not be worried about these things at all, you should feel lucky that your child knows about possible dangers.

Yes. Mass media can damage seriously the mind of kids. If they are watching horror movies, bad news, accident, bad behaviour at low ages, they can be really affected.
