Smelling of smoke.....

No offense to any smokers out there... I'm a non-smoker myself. Of course I don't believe in judging before trying, so I have tried smoking and frankly it didn't do it for me. I don't understand why people smoke, but then again that's none of my business. But what is my business is that every time I step outside of the house, I come home smelling of smoke, even though I usually hang out at the mall, which is supposed to be smoke free, I come home smelling of cigarettes. I haven't been out with anyone who smokes, so what I'm thinking is that the air around us is so thick with the smell of smoking that no one is safe from it. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the smell, but what really gets me, is that we still inhale the second hand smoke, and our lungs still burn up even if we are trying to lead a healthy life, but besides that, does my hair have to smell of smoke? It's annoying, really. The other day, my sister came home from school and she smelled like smoke, I know for a fact she doesn't smoke and I'm sure teachers don't smoke inside the school and she doesn't even takes the bus, so it must be the air, then, where else could it come from? I wasn't really that big on this issue, until my bro-in-law's cancer returned in the form of lung cancer, he's fine now, and he has never smoked a day in his life. Does it bother you, that even if you don't smoke you are still at almost the same amount of risks as smokers. And moreover, does your smoke smelling hair or clothes annoy you?

Since young,im used to the smell of smoke and it because of my dad's smoking.Haha..Im not a smoker obviously!hehe..I think im quite fine with the smell..its not that i like the smell but just i don't find it irritating or sensitive to the smell of it.Some are sensitive to smoke. To say that i smell in the smoke or a second hand smoker..im not in that category.I'll try my best and would always avoid being in that situation. Its just that i am able to stand the smell unlike some peoples who may totally dislike it.

Well, even if you can stand the smell, and it doesn't bother you since you're used to it, it still doesn't change the fact that with every breath, your lungs are actually getting harmed by the second hand smoke.

Smoking is one habit i really hate in people. What good does it do to you?IT eats up not only your lungs but also other people's.I mean why do you have to pay the price for some one else's stupidity and the sad part is many non smokers end up with lung cancer due to the second hand smoke they receive. In India smoking is banned in public places, not that anyone follows it.But whenever I see some one smoking away in public I ask him to stop it,and believe me it works more often than not because they know that they are doing wrong by smoking in public and are embarrassed.

Yeah, what's funny is that a smoker can never give you a good reason to smoke, it's like they live in shame, because they know it's wrong, and yet they can't stop.

i smoked for about 4 years total in the past. not too long compared to a lot of people. i have been smoke free for almost 8 years now! smoke bothered me before i started smoking, so not sure WHY i started, hmmmm. and the smoke bothers me now, when it's in my face or a bar and such, BUT the SMELL doesn't bother me as much, only cuz i think it's cuz i WAS a smoker myself... it's strange! but i wonder why everyone is smelling like smoke around you? here, they aren't allowing smoking anywhere anymore, so i've noticed the air a lil fresher! but people can still smoke in their cars, and homes, but even some apartment buildings aren't allowing you to smoke in your own apartment anymore. there are SO many people who DO smoke, but then there are so many that don't, so it's a struggle for both sides...lots of disagreements on the issue. glad to hear though that your brother-in-law's fine now, wow, cuz lung cancer kinda hits fast...my g-ma had lung cancer...BUT she had smoked since she was 12...and you bro-in-law had NEVER smoked, that's scary for non smokers, that they can still get lung cancer. i'd be upset just as you are. so i totally understand your point! they say second hand smoke is bad as well...it's a tough issue. this is a fantastic post!

Thanks. Well, yeah, it's weird how sometimes the closest that chain smokers get to being unhealthy is that weird smoker's cough and people who've never smoked get lung cancer. Go figure. I did hear once that second hand smoke was actually more harmful, but I'm not sure if that's entirely true. But come to think of it, second hand smoke is actually the smoke that even the smokers don't inhale and they exhale it out, so that must mean something.

I think what you meant is that the smoker is more affected than us, yeah, of course, but then again it is their choice to smoke isn't it?

Oh thats scares me about your Brother in law. My husband smokes and I hate it. He only smokes outside but it still smells, it lingers on his clothes. He always cleans his teeth and washes his hands when he comes inside but the passive smoking aspect of it scares me so much.

Yeah, it is scary, thankfully my bro-in-law is doing great now. I think second hand smoke is so much more worse, firstly because it's not your own doing and secondly it is smoke that even the smokers exhale out.

I am sorry to say that I smoke and have now for 32 years and at my last check up I still have clear lungs. I believe that the reason that all non- smokers can smell smoke more then smokers is that once you get the secent you mind tells you what it is or that at some point in your life you have been around smokers. I know people that dont smoke and dont seam to have trouble smelling things. It is kind of a dam if you do and dam if you dont thing, like when they use to say that eggs were bad for you and then they tell us it is ok to eat them. But now all I can say it that yes it is a bad habbit to have but Thank you all for holding your breath while I smoke.

ha ha, well, a smoker in the discussion, well, as I said before, no offense to you. It's good that you still have clear lungs, but then that's what I've been thinking about, and I keep hearing that second hand smoke is more harmful, of course we can't help it if we do smell like smoke, or if we are harmed by it, but then if the smoking and smokers gradually decrease, I'm sure we can see a turnaround and the chances of cancer can dramatically decrease.

I used to smoke... I quit fifteen years ago. When I was a smoker, I couldn't understand why others would make remarks about the smoke smell. Ever since I quit smoking, I can understand just how true it is. Smokers can smell so strongly that it can really take your breath away, and even non smokers often smell like smoke just from their surroundings.

The only time it really annoys me is if it is really strong. Like being in a house that is shut up tight (maybe in the winter) with people who chain smoke. I can't stand that. It also bothers me if I have a cold or something else that interfers with my breathing. I can't stand to be around smokers then because it is that much more difficult to breath. I used to smoke. It took pretty much dieing on the operating table before I could get myself to quit. It's a tough habit to break.

Hi vega83, First of all let me tell you that I am very happy for you that you are not smoking. If I had a chance to start my life from beginning I wouldn't absolutely start smoking. Actually i am not an addict I smoke occasionally 1-2 daily. But still I better not smoke. I can understand you even I am a smoker I sometimes hate smoke smell on my outfits and my hair. So yes it annoys me and hopefully i will quit soon. Have a great day!!!!

We, the second hand smokers are more in danger than those who really smoke. And yah, the smell is very annoying. It sticks in your body especially if there are heavy smoke around. But not all smokers realizes about it. They just do what pleases them.

Yeah, second hand smoke is much worse. However, I think that all smokers know the ramifications and effects of what they are doing, but they just can't seem to stop for some reason.

I am a non-smoker. No body in my family smokes. You are right that air around us is so thick with the smell of smoking that no one is safe from it. It bothers me too much that even if I do not smoke I am still at risk of smoking. Studies have proved that non-smokers are at greater risk than smokers. Keeping this in view, Govt has banned smoking in public places. But authorities are not serious about implementation of this law. Smoking in DTC buses in Delhi is banned but you will see driver and conductor themselves are smoking. Policemen smoking is an usual sight every where. It is unfortunate that non-smokers are suffering because of others wrongdoing.

I am a vehement anti-smoker, not only because I hate to have my nice clean clothes and hair smell bad because of someone else's habit, but also because of the health risks that come from inhaling other people's used smoke. Beyond that, there is the moral issue. Studies have been done that show how people strongly addicted to nicotine lose the ability to make a personal stand on moral issues over time. Here is an excellent article that explains how nicotine is similar to heroin: http://home.datacomm.ch/rezamusic/cig.html

Thanks for the article, I didn't read it, but I will when I have more time, I totally agree, it's not fair for the non smokers to be victims to the effect of smoking.

I don't smoke, which is good, since I have asthma. I don't like the way that smoke smells, at all. I hate it when I walk past my co-workers and they're smoking. I'm sure that some of their stink follows me in. My husband smokes, and I think he's a major stinker. I have trouble brething around him, even if he's not smoking at the time.

I agree with you Vega. Smoke really bad and pong. But Vega, smoking is the best activity to have for our lips exercise. No people like smoke, that is why smokers blow out the smoke because they don't like the smoke. Be a good anti-smoker, Vega. And I stand for pro-smoker...HA HA HA :::michael:::

ha ha, i really don't think it is good lip exercise, in fact it causes lines and wrinkles around the lip, and even if it good exercise I think whistling would achieve the same effect.

I think that's how it all starts. You think it's cool and it's peer pressure and everyone is doing it. Well, at least you are trying to make it less. Just do me a favor, don't smoke while walking, because I've been known to walk and there's a smoker coming from front and they seem to exhale at the very moment they pass by, that sucks.
