In India the practice of ragging is cruel.I dont know from which country this evil practice was introduced.I read sometime back in newspapers that ragging was introduced in colleges inorder to get the newcomers mingle with the senior students.Ragging is done in a acceptable manner. Now its abolished in colleges by law in India. In addition when ragging is prooved, the college management can punish to the extend of sacking the student who is involved. It is pathetic to point out this ragging had brought many deaths. There were incidents of suspension and termination of students.Still Indian law could not fully stop or prevent this evil practice. My cousin who is currently doing her medicine 2 nd year is staying in a hostel complained that there is still ragging in her college. The seniors treat them badly by askign them to write imposition of several pages if they speak against them.I was quiet shocked to hear this and convinced her to concentrate only in studies and if situation goes worst give a written complaint to the management to take action. REmoving dresses making students to wake naked in campus, making students to clean shoes and toilet and passing vulgar words on female students.some students are capable of bearing the torture. But not all some complaint to the principal of college.Alas! some who are reluctant to complain and are unable to bear the torture commits suicide. To get seats in colleges parents undergo many hurdles but after joining once group is organised and these students forget everything and indulge in unwanted activities. This ragging does not end in college and sometimes the students threaten other students outside the campus too.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The other cruel practice is eve teasing.. Its spreaded to bus stand, theatres worshipping places and other public places too.The police in plain clothes standing at bus stop catch the guys who involve in eve teasing the polie take them to the policestation thrash them and some are set free with severe warning. Mostly girls are victims in eve teasing.. Not only boys i have seen some group of girls teasing boys too.Once while i was waiting for bus a group of college girls were passing comments on a guy who was waiting for the bus.I heard them say that he looks at them and these girls were laughing and commenting at them saying that he misses all bus and will get only into the bus in which they are about to go.The boy who heard this and when his patience broke down he shouted at them to behave and went off from that place.Being a girl myslef, i felt very bad at this attitude of girls. With all this punishments why they are not refrain from this evil practice of eve teasing? Does this ragging and eve teasing exist in other countries too?

In karnataka and particularly in Bangalore, there is a lot of support for women and girls from the general public to fight against such social evils. It was prevalent only during 1960 onwards (prior to that hardly any women would go out for job, why, they even did not go to College in big number in those days). When large number of girl students started moving about, going to college, taking up tuitions, sometime taking up the jobs, then youth indulged in eve teasing. I feel that the police did not take drastic action in the beginning and as a result, it went on scotfree. Only in 1990s, the eve teasing and ragging in campus became such an obscene and highly undesirable social evil, it took the toll of hundreds of innocent people. Only in 2000's, the government, after the public outcry, took severe action against such anti-social elements and started booking cases. Several of the culprits indulged in eve teasing and college campus ragging were imprisoned. During this year, the government had made it non-bailable offense if one is involved in eve teasing and ragging in campus. Simplle imprisonment to rigorous punishment, depending on the counts is the tooth of law, the government has now. Hope the youngsters give us this obnoxious and undesirable and totally unproductive activity in total.
