Do you prefer the original or the Johnny Depp version? Did you love or hate, one or both? What did you like, or dislike?

You're gonna be shocked, but I haven't seen the second one. And I'm HUGE fan of Johnny Depp. I think he's one of the greatest actors on the scene today - he's an absolute chameleon - like Gary Oldman. I just haven't gotten around to seeing the 2nd movie. But I did love the 1st one. It was so cute! And I love Gene Wilder.

LOL that's okay! I only saw it out of morbid curiosity, and was kind of traumatized by how much they changed (from both the original film and the book)

I'm also a huge Johnny Depp fan, and I was wary about the movie, but thought if anyone could pull off a remake, he could. I was wrong. So, I don't think you're missing anything

I'd have to agree with you guys on this for the most part. The second one was changed so much that you can't really compare the two. The original is a masterpiece, we're all in agreement here, but if you think about the tim burton version separate from it being a remake then it has certain good qualities like it's subtle humour (even I giggled a few times). Like I said, it's hard to compare them.

Johnny Depp is eye candy! I just love him and so I of course HAD to watch the new version. I loved it, he as usual performed well and got into character. Then 1 day I saw the original was on DISH so I watched and saw the differences. So I can honestly say that the original was better as the movie goes, but I enjoyed the remake so much more with technology and such.

They did do a REALLY good job with the technology they had at the time in the original though. I always found that impressive!

LOL! You should write a critique. Then when people refer to it, we can use "my 4 year old did not even like it and she likes anything" as the "what critics are saying" tagline!

I like the first version. Johnny Depp made a scary and freaky looking and acting Willy Wonka

He definitely did! It was oddly feminine and ... it reminded me of a cross-dressing, talking baby/toddler with some adult intellect but emotions and ideas of a whiney little brat lol.

My 2 1/2 year old son loves the new one, he watches it several times a week and dances to the little oompa loompa songs. I kinda like the new one. It just has some funny wierd moments and it shows the father and son reuniting at the end and I think that was kina cool.

The original. I don't think anyone can top Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. Not even Johnny Depp. And, I hated the way they tried to psychoanalyze the character in the remake. I don't like a Willy Wonka with daddy issues. Wilder's sarcastic, mean, disinterested, manic, and at the end caring Wonka was much better. Plus, the original Veruca was much nastier and mean, which was great. And, there aren't any good quotes from the new movie, but the original gave me my favorite - "If the good Lord had intended us to walk, He wouldn't have invented roller skates."

My sentiments exactly!! Especially regarding the daddy issues... and the somewhat emo/feminine thing they had going on the character.

neither were as good as the book but i prefered the original solely because of the umpalumpas and Jonny Depp is really annoying in the new film

My boys loved the original one when they were little. Occassionally, my yougest still plays that one to watch lol. I have yet to see the new version, but I really like the original so I don't know if the new one could top it. What is your opinion? ~Remember to give out +'s when it's deserved & select best responses. It helps us all out ;-]

I loved the original... it's very witty. The new one changed the plot by quite a bit and I strongly disliked what was done with the Oompa Loompas and the character of Willy Wonka himself. I did enjoy seeing the factory with updated special effects though :)

There's no contest here. Gene Wilder IS Willy Wonka. He turned in a magnificent performance, and he can never be replaced, no matter how great Johnny Depp is.

The previews to the new one were enough for me. I knew it just wouldn't be the same. I'll always be a fan of the 1st one with Gene Wilder.

Definitely enjoyed the original NOT Johnny Depp. I loved the original because it was truly "magical". The Johnny Depp version was weird and didn't hold kids' attention. It was too far out and too dysfunctional.

I agree. The new version really was kind of deranged. I also thought that it felt like the movie should have ended... and then they kind of oddly incorporated the last bit, in a way that I felt finally and completely deflated the character of Willy Wonka as being any kind of role model or subject of awe...

Oh God, I HATE the Johnny Dep Version, with an almost unequaled lothing for any other movie I have ever seen! Gene Wilder didn't agree to a remake, and neither do I. I love the origional movie. The new version is complete garbage from begging to end, from it's horrid filming angles (was it an amature camera man?) to it's stupid story line...(Internal mental problems for Willy...) ug. Psychopathic in the least.

Yeah, I can't think of anything I liked about the new one really, and I HATED what they did with Wonka

I am typically pretty critical of movie re-makes, but I think this one was well done. I can't really say that one is better than the other; even though it's the same story, they told them in different ways.

The original by far is the best one. The remake was horrible! Worse movie Johnny Depp ever did. I was so disappointed!

the original. As unfair as it sounds I can't get used to it when they redo movies so I watch them but honestly I never really give the new one a chance.

The oompa loompas were tough to understand... I could never tell just what they were saying, which really took something away from the movie for me.
