Should all savings be guaranteed?

Would you like to see a levy on banks to pay for a guarantee on savings? Chancellor Alistair Darling says he is looking at ways of guaranteeing people's savings held by a bank or building society up to £100,000. Mr Darling is looking at an American-style system where savers' money is guaranteed and funded by a levy on banks and other financial institutions. The current system, guaranteeing 100% of the first £2,000 and 90% of the next £31,000, contributed to this month's run on Northern Rock, says the Bank of England. Is an American-style system the best way to restore confidence? Are you still worried about the "credit crunch"? Are you a saver? Do you work in the financial sector? How might this plan affect you?
