Is there any worth of performing mechanical engineer job?

Nowadays, we find that all mechanical engineers look for software related jobs rather than being in mechanical oriented jobs. If this trend continues, i don't know what will happen? I know so many of my friends who have hopped onto software jobs because of its higher remuneration rather than satisfaction. But is it possible to retain our identity by being paid better? How can we revert this trend?
