I hated third grade . . .

When I was in school I very nearly failed third grade. I found it boring and pointless. Most people thought I was really dumb. The first elementary I attended, through third grade, laid some very foundational work that stood me in good stead, but it also bored me in some other ways. My family moved, and the next school did a lot to turn me into a well rounded student. I just find it very ironic that for the third year in a row the major part of my school job is in third grade. LOL. I like it much better now. How was elementary school for you?

Grade school was horrible because most of the other children had nice clothes, and I wore things my mother sewed out of feed bags from the livestock store. They were nice, actually. She did a good job. But all the farm kids knew where the fabric came from. Everyone had the same patterns stacked in the barn, but they had store-bought clothes. On the other hand, I excelled in my studies and the same children who were unkind at first soon decided that if they were nice to me I might help them with their homework. My teachers used my test scores as templates for grading the other papers, and some even graded my paper first and then set me to work grading all the rest. As a result, although it should have been confidential information, I knew the scores of all the other children, even on their IQ tests. Don't worry, I didn't tell.

I had a clothes issue, as I had lots of hand me downs. I know about "flour sack" fabric, but did not have any clothes there, as we were not rural. I was in position by sixth grade that I skipped many tests and just helped the teacher with other things, as well. I know my social differences were because my family, at least my mom, was an older mom, and I had a sister (half sister) nine years older than me. I did not really interact well with my peers. I was always told, however, that I did not live up to my potential, by my teachers. By sixth grade I really loved school.

My elementary years was surely fun! I've had tons of friends to play with. Well, speaking of grades, i don't get that really high marks in 2nd grade but that didn't stop me from believing i could get better as time pass by. And it's true, i did got better with grades the next levels and I think that in some point of our lives, we see ourselves as dumb and slow learner but i think that low grades should become motivation for anyone to do their best nex time.

School in itself was OK for me, except for 2nd grade. My teacher hated me. Seriously, she did. My parents always believed they needed to present a united front with teachers, so they never let me in on how they felt about my suspicions. It wasn't until college when I asked them, and they admitted, they thought she hated me too. How someone can hate a 2nd grader is beyond me. School work always came easy, but I tried everything to get out of school. Back then no one knew I was bipolar. So my parents didn't know why I'd do just about anything to stay home, or why I'd get sick to my stomach sometimes, just because I knew school was the next day. But thankfully those days are in the past! And when I have the opportuntiy to take college courses now, I do enjoy it.

Gerty I didn't like grade school either. I was quiet and a loner. Very shy. We moved so much that I seldom got to stay in the same school for more than a few months, so it was hard for me to fit in and make friends and adapt to different teachers. I guess it traumatized me. I don't have good memories of school. Now that I'm grown and OLD, I have been a substitute teacher a few times and I enjoyed that.

We moved so many times in my childhood that I don't have a lot of good memories or many memories at all. When I saw your discussion I began to think of where I was for third grade. I believe I was in a school that is still open in our hometown. I can't remember the teacher, but do remember having a crush on a boy that walked to school with me. He lived on the same street as me. He was cute, blonde hair and blue eyes. He broke my little heart. Fourth grade was hell for me. My teacher was a witch! She yanked my hair and slammed my head into the desk when I had turned around in my seat for a brief moment. She humiliated me when I was standing in front of the class trying to remember my multiplication tables. I still have problems with math.

While checking responses on your discussion, I noticed that many of your respondents seem to have had some, shall we say, not so nice teachers in their early years of school. I had ONE like that, too. Fortunately, she only lasted one year at that school. I wonder why.Maybe it has something to do with several of the young men in that class saying something to their parents about her. Other then that one teacher, I seem to recall having a pretty good time in school. I learned a lot that has kept me going since then. I do hope that all of us can recall something positive about those years.

I studied on a very poor public school, where we used to share books because the school lack funds to provide more of it and that we give them back everytime school-year ends. Though our school is a bit old and haunted (it used to be an old Japanese Garrison during World War II), the quality of education is beyond average. I remember that our school would always be on top 3, in term of performance in the whole district. I remember my time there, though all I care about was play and wait for recess!;) I will make sure that I am on the top 10 list of bright students, who excell in the class. I just skip within sections 1 and 2, until I graduated.

I can honestly say that 3rd grade was one of my worst elementary school years. It was the year my parents divorced. I went to a total of 13 schools since my dad was in the military and there were some good and bad schools, but that had to be the most difficult of all.

I spent the entire second grade miserable. They tried to have my mom let me skip 2nd grade, because my test scores were so high in 1st grade. She wouldn't let me, and I was angry at her the entire year, mostly because I was bored out of my mind. LOL I still wonder what would have happened if she'd let me do that. Most of my friends that I ran around with were in the grade ahead of me anyway.

Believe it or not, I failed third grade because the teacher didn't like me. She even wouldn't let me use the bathroom before getting on the bus and I would have to sneak my way out the door to go or I'd have to ask the bus driver if she'd wait for me so I could go. My teacher knew I was born with a small bladder and had to go more often than the others and she knew my bus stop was the last one on my route but still she wouldn't let me go. Then we had moved and I went to a different school which then I had a wonderful and sweet teacher by the name of Mrs. Walker. She was such a sweet older lady and she took me under her wing, so much so that I even visited her at her home for a few years. Then fourth grade I had a mean cruel teacher who did nothing but embarass me in front of the whole class because of my problem and because I couldn't hear very well. I'll never forget her either, she was pretty as a picture but just as mean. Her name was Miss Ellis. She looked just like Dorathy Hamill, the skater but she didn't have any of her personality but meanness. Now that I'm older, I feel that if I ever see her on the street, I'd knock her down cold in a heartbeat for she deserves it and then some.
