Do You Have a Secret?

Most of us have at some time been told a secret that is supposed to be kept confidential. It is not easy to keep a secret because, the very nature of a secret creates an overwhelming desire to share it with at least one other person. I have always struggled when someone tells me a secret and makes me swear to keep it to myself. I used to have a big mouth and that made it very hard to keep a secret. I have matured past that stage now, but I still don't like to be tempted. I just started letting friends and family know that I was not the person to tell their secrets to. When you talk a lot-as I used to-things have a way of slipping out. How do you handle it when someone tries to tell you a secret? Do you ever tell anyone else?

I love having secrets, I look at a secret as something that no-one else has and I know that someone has given me their secret it is then put in the vault if I may steel a line from Seinfeld, I have many secrets some I think that could destroy a couple of peoples lives, one in particular and i have told this person they should not trust anyone with information like that as sometimes friendships can be strained and that is when secrets can be used in revengeful ways, but I still would not give secrets away....

I admire your honesty and discretion, lilaclady. Something told to us in secret should never be revealed to another person. I finally learned my lesson when a secret that I wasn't supposed to tell got out and caused a lot of heartache.(:

Yeh I think when women or even somtimes men get together it can be a temptation to gossip I know but I think I have a "I know something you don't " attitude and I like it that way.... :)

I don't tell a soul. I am the type of person you can tell anything to and I won't tell anyone. This comes about because I was a Counselor when I was working and could not divulge personal information of my clients.

That makes you a great person, naty. When we are entrusted with a secret it speaks to our integrity as to whether we reveal it or not.

lol..I was like that too. I'm very tempted to tell and not like sharing a secret with everyone I know. But sometimes it almost slips, when I know something and am talking about the person with someone else. Luckily, I've almost stopped myself in time. What I do now is try to forget the secret as soon as it is told to me (lol..hard task that)

You know what? Most of the secrets I've been told have also been told to lots of other people. I'm sworn to secrecy and honour that only to find that it's common knowledge. I once got upset with a friend for this and they just dumped me...lol. I tried to get in touch a while later, not just with him but some mutual friends too, only to find that he had told everyone I was a weirdo. So now when I'm told a 'secret', I don't take much notice.

Hehehe--I can be real good about keeping secrets, maybe cause I don't like the idea if the tables were turned and I confided and told a secret to someone then found out it was all but published in the National Enquirer

That is so true, pyewacket, as I found out the hard way. You can get just as much fallout from revealing a secret as the ones who participated.(:

I have a secret and it will go to my grave with me. It was told to me by a friend about her parents. To spill the beans would totally destroy the memory of someone and their reputation....so I won't tell. But I have other secrets too...I am the kind of person people confide in because they know I won't tell.

Good for you, jillhill! You are just the kind of friend that one would be happy to have. To keep a secret is to exhibit true friendship.(:

I am really good at keeping secrets when someone tells me something...But myself if I have a secret, I feel like I really have to tell just one person.

Good for you worldwise honey - if you don't want to or feel unable to keep someone elses secrets then you are doing the right thing by telling them upfront! My problem isn't with keeping other peoples secrets - I can do that really easily as I don't think it is my place to tell anyone, my problem is when I try to keep a secret of my own - I really can't keep them! xxxx

I have no secrets. My life is an open book to anyone who knows me...I can't even keep my own little secrets. Sometimes I try not to tell someone something, usually my mother...lol...but I always end up telling her. I can't keep a secret either. I try to find someone that the person doesn't know to tell it to so it doesn't matter if they know about it.

I have a lot of secrets not for myself because hoenstly I dont have anything to hide. I am alwys told confidential things and I work in a confidential department and I definitely do not gossip so I hve no problems with keeping secrets. People normally confide in me.

I always tell people who want to tell me a secret that I am willing to keep it from ALMOST everyone. I don't keep secrets from my husband, so if someone isn't willing for something to be shared with him, I ask them not to tell me, either. Other than that, I am very good at keeping secrets from/for people.
