Laughing just for the sake of laughing

My former boss told a story about his trip to China. He went on a business trip together with a few VIPs. So, during a dinner party, most of the guests were talking chinese dialect which was foreign to my former boss. He told me he couldn't understand a word they were saying. He said he smiled when someone smiled at him and when they laughed, he laughed also not knowing what was so funny. He said he felt completely uneasy and looked silly. I thought to myself, why laugh when you don't even know what is there to laugh about? So, if you were in his situation, will you just laugh and join the crowd or will you keep quiet hoping the night ends soon?

If I were your boss, I will keep on interrupting the laughing session on and on and make them explain to me what they are laughing about and I would do that until they give up and may start to share the stuffs with me... Anyway, I had been to meetings where the language could not be understood by me and I just went on doing my stuffs until they finally decided to change the language...

I dont understand why people do that either, but I have done it myself and I still don't understand lol. I just feel nervous and uneasy and in the end, I end up laughing because I don't know what else to do.

Same here. I have also done that. It was during a family gathering. When I entered the room, everyone was laughing out loud. I felt funny when I saw them laughing so I joined them also.
