Okay you know it never fails. When I go grocery shopping I always end up not getting enough ground beef for all the different meals I am going to make. How I end doing this is beyond me. As I am shopping I try to keep track on my shopping list how many pounds of ground beef I am going to need. So now I have about 2 meals left that call for ground beef and I only have enough for 1 meal. But I do have hamburger patties which is also ground beef right. So I was thinking I could just use some of the hamburger patties. But before I do I wanted to see from everyone here, if anyone has tried using hamburger patties as a substitute for ground beef. If you have, how did it turn out?

Hi Speedy! I sure have done this before. It's the same meat, only in hamburger form. I've got a good easy recipe for you called Meatball Stew...very simple. You can make as much as you like with this, there's no real rules to amounts, just make what suits your family size. Meatballs, 2-3 cans of Campbell's French Onion Soup (I only use Beef Boullion cubes instead, onions and me don't get along anymore), potatoes cut and cubed, carrots cut up, green beans, mushrooms (canned is fine), beef boullion, and heat it up until the potatoes and carrots are done. Really easy, and I have a salad on the side, with buns for dipping......very yummy.

Thank you very much for sharing. That recipe sure sounds good. I will definitly try it. Instead of potatoes cut up, could you use southern style hash browns? Reason I am asking is because I made a chowder tonight for dinner. It's called Bacon, cheddar, and potatoe chowder. It says to just use southern style hash browns.

I don't see any reason why not, but I think I would let them thaw out first and drain them so you don't have too much excess water....I guess, haha!...I'm so not a cook! I think it would be fine, they're already just cut up potatoes, right?...haha.

As long as you break up the patty it's the same thing. I mean think about it, if you were making your own patties you'd use ground beef right? Just check on the size of the patties to be sure you're using the right amount of beef. Most are 1/4 pounders which makes it easy to figure out. I've done it plenty of times and never noticed any difference.

Chopping up the hamburger patties should work fine, especially if their going in a sauce, soup, stew or cassarole. Their just hamburger that has been pressed into shape.

I have chopped up hamburger patties and used them in spaghetti sauce before. It came out fine. I sometimes run out of ground beef too. Luckily the store is close enough to walk to. So what meals did you make from the ground beef? Maybe I can get a few new ideas.

Thank you for sharing. The store is close but not close enough to walk to. Plus we go shopping once a month and buy everything we need for the month. So I try not to have to make extra trips to the store if I don't have to. As far as what meals I have made from ground beef, the meals are mainly hamburger helpers. I have a family of 5 and we have to budget our money. But I do make other delicious meals using ground beef. Some of the meals I make are: Manicotti, Green bean hamburger casserole topped with tator tots, spaghetti, Chili meatloaf & Potato casserole, Texas Hash, and Hamburger steaks. If any of those sound good and you want the recipe, send me a pm and I will give you the recipe.

With the recent news regarding frozen ground beef patties...I threw away all of them that I had in my freezer... They do not really make a good substitute in my opinion, unless you are able to completely break them up into the little crumbled pieces...which is not easy to do...

Well if I do use them. I would probably completely thaw them out first. That might make them a little easier. What was on the news about them? I didn't hear anything about them. Could you provide me with a link to an article about it?

Thank you for the link. I will go check it out. My husband and I didn't hear about it. My husband is the one that normally watches the news because I am too busy cleaning, cooking, or taking care of the kids.

Here is a link to the recall of frozen beef patties on CNN...it was in the news for approximately 2 weeks...my husband and I discussed the possible risk and I cleared all that I had in the freezer out... www.cnn.com/HEALTH/9708/14/hamburger.recall/
