I have heard a lot of stories about racism including my own race. However, do you really think that racism still exist in our modern time and genre? Why you said so?

Racism is one of the world's oldest problem and i believe it still exist. It was an issue just recently here in our country after an episode of Desperate housewives was said to have had a racist remark in one of its dialogue. I feel so sad for those people who, because of their skin's wrong color and heavy accent, are being stereo-typed, labeled and pre-judged by others.

Oh, I remember that case with desperate housewives. It is certainly sad that people tend to label others according to their color, heavy accent and the like.

Wow! that is so sad to know. That is very rude for her to say that. As for me, I am from the Philippines and just migrated here in the US on May this year, so far I never encounter yet any harsh comment from the people here but I am aware that some people look down other races that they think are inferior to them.

Marie, racism is slowly dying away, but it is still not completely wiped out from the psyche of avered racists. These people are only overwhemned by the popular world oppinion against racism-they however take so much gratification in racist outbursts that they cant help making racists attacks. Recently I read about Hispanics in America making racist attacks on African Americans-it gave me a deep sense of resentment because like you aptly put, should this be happening in this day and genre?

I think it depends on what people consider racism, there seems to be a thin line of what is racism and lack of acceptance, I think a lot of people are called racist these days for just stating that they do not agree with something, and people are so sensitive sometimes disagreement is taken as racism.

Yeah, lack of acceptance and racism have a very close association; they are almost synonyms. Once you don't accept someone because of your personal reason and granting that he doesn't possess threats to you and the society then I can consider that as a form of racism. We tend to be a racist in various ways, it could be in a bigger issue or just a small matter. Thanks for sharing lilaclady.

In some areas, I think it still exists. Though to only a few and isolated cases, I think this has become a part of society. It depends, from physical apperance, to colors and beliefs. I guess we just have to be aware of it and try not to down-grade anyone according to what and who people are, it's always nice to live a life and walk around this world without worrying that someone might attack us..

Absolutely Raijin! there is no such an overwhelming and peaceful feeling to not carry any grudge and fears of being attacked no matter where we go. I must agree with you, racism is so broad and even in our own race, there are some people who tend to look down on others. For me, it's another form of racism, although we might look at it that way.

Hey dear friend, How have you been? Missed. Ok lets go back to the topic of the day! Racism still exists and it is depicted all over. Some people can even despice you when you are in your own country and they are just passing tourists. Only your friend cannot discriminate you but if you find a stranger on the way, he surely will discriminate you. But it does not matter to me, the one God that we pray to is the same, the one oxygen that we breath in is the same and matter of factly if you pinch both they will bleed the same colour of blood. Thanks for this discussion.

Sadly, racism is all around. I am a white mom of two daughters. We live in a mostly white area and we constantly hear remarks against other races. I have taught my girls early on that we are all equal. They have also grown up to defend any race being put down. To me any form of racism is just a form of arrogance. Out of the blue yesterday, I received a piece of mail in my name and inside was a flyer titled " White Racists Pay Taxes Too! It was very upsetting to me and even more so that a group like this has my mailing address. I am not sure what to do with it. Is it legal for this stuff to come in ones mail? I am afraid if I ignore it they will assume they can mail more. It is the first time I have ever received such a thing. Yes, racism is out there and quite a bit. And those growing up racist are being taught by ignorant and arrogant adults. I just keep remembering that those who judge shall be judged.

of course racism still exists, even in this day! you hear about it almost daily on the news, hate crimes, you see examples of it on tv. if racism did not exist anymore, then groups like the Klu Klux Klan would no longer be around, etc etc. its sad to realize it, but it is true, racism may not be quite as prevailant (sp?) as it used to be by far, but it does still exist.

Unfortunately yes, it still does exists. The reason why is because some people just won't change their way of thinking, so they still have the mentality of believing they are better than others who look different and it also follows through into each generation.. Then you have what I call reverse racism, where those whose people who treated wrong, feel they need to "bully" the other guy to make them feel better and this also is handed down to each generation.

Racism do still exist in our modern time and it is disturbing to know why some people do this on their fellow men. We may not experience racism as what it was in the early 60's. Martin Luther King may have changed that and the blacks today enjoys the same treatment the society has to offer with the white people. Segregation is now a thing of the past. In a country where white minorities rules over a black race, Nelson Mandela did more a lot to make such a turn-around in South Africa. United States is a melting pot of many cultures and races. I do believe that to some extent, racism do exist in many forms in the workplace, in schools, in the military service,in the government, and in some isolated cases in hospitals too. People are brought up by various beliefs and traditions, and unknowingly some people inflict emotional damage to some people belonging to a different race. Demeaning words, I guess, is the worst weapon a person can do to humiliate another human being. On the other hand, I am glad to see that American society is more civil in dealing with various kind of people as compared to other countries. Some countries in Africa are more severe with their fellow countrymen because of tribal/ethnic differences. Here, we saw how ethnic cleansing transformed a nation into a country of refugees. Their economic growth slowed down into a standstill retrogressing a country into a medieval state. Racism can also be paralleled to religious differences. And this is so prevalent in the middle east in the form of terrorism. As each tries to outwit the other, the victims are the ordinary people who wanted to live life in peace. Coexistence is possible and I wonder why some resort to violence to justify their struggle. Very seldom we see in the animal kingdom where they kill their own kind, but people killing each other because of distinct racial origin is really detestable. It is my prayer to finally stop all wars, end ethnic cleansing, cease fundamentalism...racism of any genre should finally take a back seat in our society.

Yes racism is alive and well. I suppose that if you have enough money to live far enough away from your neighbors and can insulate yourself well enough at work it won't touch you, but come down to earth down to my world and see what is really going on. I live in low income housing. One of the first things that I did when I moved in was force the administration to set up a mediation between two residents. A mouthy white woman had called one of my neighbors the "N" word actually screamed it repeatedly and no one seemed interested in doing anything about it. This neighbor is a 6'7" man and he stood there and took it. He wasn't real quiet about it, but he took it. It made me sick. I am a white woman too and I was ashamed. However, I am also a Jew and where I live it is dangerous to be a Jew so I know a lot about racism but I was not going to stand by with everyone else and just let this happen. There are no innocent bystanders!! If a crime is committed we are all responsible until it is rectified!!
