did you ever own a playstation 1 or 2? if so have you ever bought a playstation magazine that gives demo discs for free with them? you get to keep the disc, you get to play some of the games levels, but you can't play the full version unless you go out and buy the full game. well that's what free to play is like, it's a demo version of the full game, it's there to give you an idea of what playing runescape is like. it's not a trick or anything of the sort, infact runescape are one of the very few internet games that basically offer you unlimited free play (unlike games like WoW that have no free play services at all). if you don't want to pay the membership fee, or simply can't afford to at the momnet, then enjoy what there is in free to play, you can get all free to play skills to 99 then join members lol and jagex wont stop you, free play isn't limited (time wise) so in effect it's a full game in it's own right.

Its hardly a trick. The freeworlds are more like an extended tutorial island. It gets your interest in the game so you move over to membership.
