What are you like when "service" people come to your house to do something?

Direct Tv fiasco! - direct tv dish
United States

Tuesday I had Direct Tv installed. The guy was over half an hour late and called me two times because he got lost. It was after 8pm when he got here and I know he didn't want to do it but of course I insisted. My apartment building has just been sided and when I was outside with him looking for the other dishes I noticed they were gone so I told him it had to go on the roof. His reply was "I don't think I want to do that, can it go over there"...pointing to one of my windows. I didn't know what to say and figured the other people would be putting theirs back so I said ok. So up it goes. While he was in my apartment a neighbor came by and told us it would have to go on the roof because the other tenants were told that. He just kept on connecting my tv. I asked him if he would move it to the roof and he said to call the company in the morning, finished up and left. I know I should have stuck to my guns about the roof and I'm a wus...lol...so now I'm sitting here waiting again for them to come and reinstall it on the roof! I hate the way I am! Are you like me (I hope not..lol) and just go along with whatever the service person says and wants or do you hold your ground and tell them what you want done?

I don't usually deal with this myself personally... I have direct tv (it's included in my rent, my landlord has it). He decided to switch to digital cable one day and told me about it so I knew someone would be in my apartment. however, about 2 weeks later he decided to switch back to direct tv, which is cool...whatever. But he failed to tell me this so one day I come home and I see my door wide open and I'm like WTF!? cause I didn't have a screen door yet and I have a cat! so I'm like OMG WHERE IS MY CAT! and run inside to look for him. Fortunately he's such a good cat and a scaredy cat that he was hiding in the closet the whole time and didn't know that my door was even open! So I was angry as anything and went over into my landlords apartment (i didn't knock) and yelled at him (In front of the service guy) for not only not telling me people were coming over but for leaving my door open! and the service guy apologized because it was his fault the door was open... and then he said that he's glad he didn't know i had a cat, cause he's scared of them. and I said, yeah but had you known you wouldn't have left my frickin door open!!! my landlord in itself is a piece of work though.

lol...you should have told him it was a good thing the cat didn't see him because he's an attack cat! That would have scared the pee out of him!

I was more mad at my landlord than the service guy though. cause granted he shouldn't have left my door open, but my landlord shouldn't have left him alone in my apartment and my landlord KNOWS I have a cat. Whenever he's in my apartment when I'm not home, he always closes my bathroom door. My cat's litterbox is in there. sometimes I go out after work. Can you imagine if my poor kitty had to go for hours on end without his litter box!?

lol...that poor kitty. The fact that he couldn't use his litter box alone might have turned him into an attack cat!!!

I generally stand my ground and tell them what needs to be done and make sure they do it. I've had service people do that to me in the past (what he did with you) and I ended up having to pay for a second visit, so I stopped letting them get away with not doing the job right the first time.

I'm lucky because their considering it a job unfinished so I'm not being charged. He was supposed to come back yesterday and didn't show so I called them telling them I'm having second thoughts about the whole thing so their promising me today. What I don't like is they are sending the same guy out!

Yep! I do it all the time. Most of the servicemn come have tea also at my expense and leave without doing the proper work. I keep complaining over and over. ONe of my neighbour jokes that its because I offer them tea, they feel they need to make two trips for a job that can be done with one trip, lol.

Well, I draw the line at tea! lol....I still feel they are here to do a job and not to sit and have a chat with me. But that is very nice of you.

Well sometimes I am like you (when I don’t exactly know what is the correct alternative) but my Mom is always like you and then she keeps on yelling at all of us when the thing has been done and she is facing a lot of problems coz of it. But talking of ‘service guys’, you are lucky enough to have them turn up at least. Last month I bought an LG washing m/c on the 23rd and had it delivered on the 29th! Matters just started going downhill after that. The installation guy was supposed to come for the demo within 2 to 3 days and we kept on calling the dealer for a request of after 7pm time (since both my hubby & me are working). Believe me, its only after I lodged a formal complain with their national cell on Tuesday (13th nov) that this guy calls us up saying that he would come on Thursday 15th nov. We were like OK and by the time he turned up, it was 9:20pm! My dinner was uncooked, dishes unwashed, bed unmade and I had just finished studying with my son for his exams. He left around 10:30 but we insisted that he complete the entire demo schedule and he had to do it. sometimes you should really be very strict with them as they tend to just finish off the day’s calls in a casual manner and end the day early.

If it was an apartment rule that it could only go on the roof then I would of said that to the serviceman and forced the issue but then again sending a serviceman onto the roof at night might be dangerous. I might have rescheduled during the time he was calling saying he was late, but then again I might not LOL

I also tend to be a wimp when it comes to dealing with service people, ctry. Even when I know that I am right and they are wrong, I will go along with what they say. This led me to being charged a heavy fee a couple of years ago from a telephone company I was with at the time. I have gotten a bit more assertive since that incident-but not as much as I would like to be.
