someone posted a discussion that pinoys are tagalogs. i disagree basically for two reasons; first, not all pinoys are tagalogs. as a bicolano, i am not a tagalog but i see myself as pinoy. second, i consider the statement an "imperialistic" rhetoric from an imposing center or capital. what do you think? do you agree?

i could not believe it too when i saw it. so i responded to it and it inspired me to post this discussion. thank you for your reply eden.. one ethnic group in the philippines is not better than the others. we should not try to impose on others, especially about identity.

that is the sad thing...there are still few people who had this 'regionalism' thing...they thing that their group is superior...but i don't care...everyone has his own view...but i'm proud to be pinoy...i'm proud to be bisdak!...lol

Tagalogs are just some portion of the Philippines. There are Ilocanos, etc. and it is wrong to say that pinoys are tagalogs only. Tagalogs are pinoys as also those who speak other dialects.

thank you for your comment. i totally agree with you. but i think the tagalogs have this air of claiming that they are more pinoys than others. that's why they coin the label "promdi" for those who come from the province. the label has negative connotations.

Yeah that is true, although we are all taught to speak tagalog or pilipino, we do still have many sub-dialects all over the country which represent different regional groups all ovcer the Philippines. Pinoy is composed of the tagalogs, bicolano, visayans and mindanaoans.

most non-tagalogs would agree with what we are saying here. but the tagalogs would usually have this "imprialistic" and superiority complex that they sometimes refer to non-tagalogs as promdi (from the province). at first glance, there is nothing wrog with being a promdi. but in a closer examination and connotation of the word, it hints something bad on the person referred to as promdi. it connotes ignorance, foolishness, and at times stupidity which are all untrue. the tagalogs coined this one to us. i don't want to pick a heated discussion here with the tagalog. i'd just like to express what i observe and feel. i am pinoy. and i am a bicolano and not tagalog.

You are right Filipino or pinoy doesn't mean tagalog.Tagalog is the national language of the Philippines.I am a tagalog from the province of Rizal, but i agree with you.Maybe you should change the word imperialistic to regionalistic, that is more appropriate word.

Yeah, I agree. I'm not tagalog either. Nor am I Chavacano, nor Cebuano, nor Tausug. hehe. You see, I live in Zamboanga, but I haven't learned how to speak chavacano (though I can understand). We speak bisaya at home, but that doesn't make us one now, does it? And I certainly can not call myself Tausug, because I'm not a Muslim, and I don't know how to speak their dialect (though I can understand a bit). So what am i? I call myself a pinoy. ^__^
