Does anyone still eat plain ole iceberg lettuce anymore?

While posting and reading a friend's discussion about salad a thought occurred to me...suddenly, or maybe not so suddenly, iceberg lettuce has disappeared and romaine and other greens have taken over the "starring role" in our salads. I'm not sure exactly when it happened but I haven't bought a head of iceberg lettuce in a couple years and I've come to really love romaine. So, do you still buy iceberg if you buy lettuce? What caused this new trend? Annie

Now that my mom's passed away, I'll only get Romaine lettuces or any of the other leafier types..When she was alive and I'd fix a salad dinner she only would eat iceberg lettuce, nothing else. I've always known though that the greener and leafier types of lettuce have more nutrients and iron in them than iceberg

I love all kinds of lettuce. I went to buy lettuce the other day and had to buy romaine, because the iceburg was too expensive. They wanted almost $2.00 a head. OMG I love the *crunch* of the iceburg lettuce and I don't think that any of the other lettuces have it. The new trend? I think because iceburg does not have many vitamins and minerals and other *healthy* stuff in it, like the others do.

I always used to think the romaine was the most expensive but now it's all expensive so it doesn't seem to make a difference around here. Maybe it is the vitamin and mineral content, I guess romaine is healthier. I like it better though, I just didn't know it until recently. Annie

I still have Iceberg lettuce. I also like to have a spinach salad, which is really good. Apparently, the greener the leaf, the better it is for you. I have hear that Iceberg lettuce is mostly water, however, I still enjoy it. I do so many fun things with salad. I love to have salad with Trail Mix. It makes the salad mom substantial and really good and tasty. I also like to do the crutons, with the bacon bits, the whole works. My favorite salad of all is Chinese chicken salad.

I'm with you, I also love the croutons and the bacon bits. In fact I recently ran out of bacon bits and kept forgetting to get more and although my salads were good without them I still felt there was something missing. I finally remembered to get some the other day and I'd forgotten how much they add to the flavor. I also love the croutons, they give that extra crunch. Thanks for a great suggestion about Trail Mix. I'm definitely going to give that a try. Annie

Really, no dressing at all? Then you really ARE a rabbit...lol! Seriously, we'd all be better off if we did cut back on the dressing probably but unfortunately I like LOADS of it on my salads. Annie

Hi Annie, I know I dont buy the iceburg anymore. I cant eat it. I really get some bad stomach pains if I do. Now I can eat all the Romaine Baby hearts I desire! I buy them in the package mixed with red cabbage and carrots, or in the bunches or stalks if you want to call them that. Not sure what they are called. LOL Seems like the iceburg messes with my gullbladder and I have severe pain in my upper back under my arm and around to my stomach. I may be able to eat maybe one bowl of it or something, but eating it more than just one day realy does me in. Id rather not be in so much pain. Not sure what it is about the Romaine, but I can eat it everyday and have no problems with it. Bay Lay Gray xx

For years my husband complained that lettuce gave him heartburn and indigestion and I told him he was crazy. I guess he wasn't crazy after all because I've heard of others like you and him who had the same problem with iceberg lettuce. Now I get romaine and he doesn't say a word anymore. Annie

LOL Isn't that something Annie. I really would like to know what it is about ice burg lettuce! Maybe it's because it's so thick, and it's hard to break down. The romaine seems thinner or something. Bay xx

I still get and prefer Iceburg lettuce (but only FRESH green iceburg lettuce) for a few reasons. I really like the crunch and taste of Iceburg. I can eat it plain if I need to lollol! Also, romaine and the others make my mouth very dry when I eat it for some reason. It's very annoying and weird. So I guess for now, if not for always, I will stick with Iceburg lettuce. Hope the prices don't keep going up.

*raises hand* I would rather have Iceberg lettuce than any other lettuce. So if I buy any that is what I buy. Restaurants rarely use it. But it's still in the bagged salads which I rarely buy but when I do it's always Iceberg. So it is always what I buy. I'm actually not a really big fan of romaine. The two things I hate about chicken ceaser salad. The ceaser and the lettuce.

Iceberg is all my mother would buy. I just had some today in a salad from the buffet at Pizza Hut. I don't generally buy lettuce but if I did I'd buy Iceberg because that's the kind I'm used to.

I mostly buy iceberg lettuce. I will sometimes buy romaine lettuce, but not very often. It depends on whet else I am putting on the salad which one I use. Around here iceberg is the cheapest lettuce. I bought some just the other day for 98 cents a head.

I absolutely love iceberg lettuce! It's the lettuce that I always buy from the supermarket because it tastes the freshest without tasting like you're eating leaves off a tree or bush!

Yep. That would be my mom. She doesn't care about the nutrients that are in a food, and she doesn't like how "strong" other lettuce is. I love romaine, and even spinach so I don't have a clue what she is talking about.

Oh yes I still buy iceberg lettuce. I like the other lettuces for salads, but nothing beats iceberg lettuce for sandwiches. It stays the freshest all day long, on your sandwich. It goes with any kind of meat or spreads. It goes good with mustard. And to boot, it's the cheapest to buy. It lasts longer in the fridge, stays fresher. I like the crispness of it better, too. I still like romaine best for salads though. And garden lettuce in the summer.
