Constancy and structure! Those are the two biggest things. If you are not consistent then your child will not believe you when you say some thing. Structure provides a sense of security for a child and we all know children need that. Those are the two main pieces of advice that I can give you. Every thing really does come naturally. I did not believe it either, but it does. Good luck and congratulations on being a new mom! Welcome to motherhood it truly will make your life complete.

Well, my daughter is now 4 1/2 yrs old...and until she started talking back(sarcastically) things were pretty much a breeze. (Just find some time for yourself each day.) Mostly this time for me is after she is in bed for the night. a book, time with my hubby whatever. As for when children say no to whatever you ask them to do, or have sarcastic comments like "your the mom that's your job"...I find a moment of silence works for me..hers and mine. She goes to her room and I walk away. 5 minutes later it's "I'm sorry mom" and all is right in the world. lol If you are truly a newbie, you are lacking in sleep. Best hint nap when your child does, forget the housework. It'll be there later. Besides your house will never be the same till the kids move out! LOL Also keep in mind at 2, 3, 4 when they want to play with you do it.Time moves so fast you will miss those chances later when they are with their friends. Good luck
