Do you text message?

Do you like to text message on your cell phone? My daughter insists that is how we communicate - for the most part. She is really busy and I know that and and she just wants to ask a question, or state something and then be done - no other chatter. Sometimes I can't answer the question properly and she'll think I'm nuts for waht I texted, but it needed more than just a yes or no. I have to do all the tapping and one button 1,2 or 3 times for which number and space and yada yada yada on it goes. Good grief!. It helps occassionally like if I am shopping and see something on sale for my GD's and text my son or daughter if they want it or can wear it and they can text back, yes or no. But this text conversation malarky is so annoying! Then again, I am on of the last of the 20th century hang-ons, so it might just be me. But, just call me! What about you? Like or dislike text messaging!

I actually think I text more than I talk to most of my friends and family. It is just easier and I don't run up my bill trying to talk and it not be the time it's free. It is just a lot easier for me. If I could talk for free then it would be ok, but since it's not always free, texting is what I do. lol

But don't you miss actually hearing the voice of your friends and family? I mean, hearing them giggle as something you said that was funny or letting them enjoy hearing you giggle? or the groans and other non-word comments? Texting just seems to take the personality out of "chatting". We do it here I know but sometimes I get tired of seeing "LOL!!" instead of hearing the laughter!

well who doesnt these days because text messaging is more fun than talking for instance the only reason why people llike to send emails is because it seems more fun to do that that just call them up on the phone and tell them things. i would say i am a constant text messager because i basically live off of it just like i do with the computer. you are just glued to it like nothing you have been glued to before. i would say that text messaging is more addictive than eating chocolate or in some cases smoking but i wouldnt know how addictive smoking is because i never tried but another fact you should know is that teenagers make up over 90% of the people in the world who text message.

But isn't it funner or better, whatever you want to call it.. to say what you want to say in one blurb, instaed of texting a sentence at a time, and having to remember what your texted, what you read and put it all together to make a conversation? I mean if you ask "hey, how's your day?" nad it is texted by "Oh, fine". You text, "What are you doing to day", nad it is texted back "nothing". You text, "Well wanna come over?" they text.... and on it goes. Could have been done while ago if it was spoken...and what about hte times when you have to repeat like directions just to make sure they got them... I can think of alot of things that would be better spoken than texted, but I guess I am in the minority. I hate texting! Guess I have more to say than most.

Text message is very useful. When someone is in a meeting, when they cant answer the phone, they can send a text message to communicate. You can communicate in between, share information. It has a lot os advantages. But now a days people just call up and coomunicate as the charges are almost same as text message. Still text message used while busy or on roaming.

I can see it would be useful for emergencies and if you don't have access to a phone due to job or on the road or something like that, but to say to use it to text "while in a meeting" - shame on you! You should be listening to the meeting!!!!! (LOL!!!) Just kidding of course! I hate texting. I"ll do it for quick things, but not a conversation. Allt hat tapping and tapping and once, twice, three taps, ooppss! I thought I pressed it three times to get the third letter, but here is hte second one, oh, good grief I tapped four times instead of 3!!!!! No, thank you. Call me!

I certainly agree with that, for those who do text. My son and his wife text back and forth during the day when neither is allowed to have a phone turned on. Some days they have things that have to be discussed NOW and texting works as a real timesaver, even practically a lifesafer in some cases, for them.

Are you kidding? I can barely answer my prepaid cell phone! I don't even think it supports text messaging. You're not the only one hanging on to the 20th century, coffeebreak! I have a Tracfone, which I love because I just add minutes when I need to, but I don't even know how to check my voicemail! Maybe at Christmas when my kids are home I can have them show me how to do that. I absolutely love the new electronic gadgets and have even done extensive reading and even wrote a review about the new amazon Kindle, and I'd love to have one of those, but I can get along pretty well without a lot of new-fangled bells and whistles. I told my husband once I thought I'd like to have a blueberry. He very gently asked me if I meant a blackberry. He was right, I had the wrong fruit! Ha!Text messaging? Well, my BFF coffeebreak, IDK but I think I can live without it. For now.

I haven't used up my tracfone minutes either, but they did come in handy when we went on vacation this summer. My husband will be happy to know that I'm not the only one who calls a blackberry a blueberry!

I had seen those on TV,, didn't know what they were called. But I thought - really, now you don't have to read books you just use this tiny little screen to read? Some how it, to me, just takes the fun out of reading and the relaxation out of it. Where's the "turn the page" fun? You know, when you get so intereted and excited and you just can't wait to "turn the page".... now, what, you just scroll down? !!? "snuggle up with a good book in front of the fire", somehow just won't be the same! Another legacy, down the internet! I dont' want one of those!

I guess family plans are the way to go. A blackberry allows you to do email on the go, which would be a great thing for me since I communicate with my family and just about everyone else via email these days. Problem is, I'm rarely on the go since I'm such a homebody. There's probably a lot more you can do with it than that, so maybe someone else can chime in. I do know you can get them with a little keyboard, which would be a lot easier than the standard cell phone keys. The Kindle is something new from amazon.com. It's a wireless reading device, a great gadget about the size of a paperback book, a thin one, and you can buy books from amazon and upload them onto the Kindle and read them there. One cool thing is that the screen is a new technology that isn't backlit so it's easy to read and, in fact, looks like you're reading paper. You can also subscribe to newspapers and magazines and the latest edition is uploaded automatically. I'd love to have one so I can read in bed. Did you ever have a heavy book plop onto your nose when you were reading in bed?? I have and it isn't very fun. Anyway, there are other cool things about it including the wireless technology, which uses advanced cell phone technology instead of a wireless internet connection. Do I sound like I know what I'm talking about? The Kindle is about the only device I know anything about because I'm so interested in it. I read a lot, watched the videos, and even made a Squidoo page about it. It's on my "in my dreams" list, but you never know. I guess I should send that list to Santa!

Hi. If i a communication is not that urgent, i used text but if its an emergency, i used call. So it depends on the event that requires me to use text and call on my cell phone. Besides texting is more cheaper that call. So i prefer to use tex. Thanks

of course! all the time! text messaging is not only a phenomenon, it's already a part of our everyday life conversing with others. really, i dont mind tapping the buttons, i can do it even without looking since i hace already memorized the letters and numbers placed on the keypad. text messaging is so much cheaper than a phone call, u can do it discretely during a meeting or an event and it's easier to say difficult things by texting them instead of calling up the person, and hearing their voice on the other end.

I love to text message! You dont have to tap the keys that many times! hhee there is a much faster way to do it! Get them to show you how to do it by just spelling the words with the keys. It's called osmething different on different phones, mine is word9 or something. It's just a different setting. It allows you to type and it guesses the words you want to use, if it picks the wrong word, then you hit next and it moves on to the next most common word! its ingenious! and much much faster.

Never heard of that way. My phone is probably to old for it. My daughter put me on her plan and last time she updated, she handedm e down hers and I tossed the one I had (well, I gave it to the GD's to play with) and that was about 2-3 years ago. She upgraded again, and gave me one with, well forget what it was, but it was the same but backwards as the one I had. So I told her I'd rather keep the one I had. I just would rather speak to a person - bad enough when you have to talk to an automated voice, but to have to "speak" in silence - I'll pass on that one!

DOn't like or dislike. I think it has its uses and can be a part of the whole cell phone experience. On the other hand the way kids are using it seems to me a bit exagerated. My daughter has free text messaging on her plan, which is really great because she has about 1000 text messages each month incoming and outcoming. THey don't use it for just a yes or no thing, or for something that is important when they are somewhere that they can't make a regular call. They use it as part of their social environment. Huge conversations back and forth, sometimes when they could just go out the door and meet the friend that they are messaging too 3 doors down LOL incredible, at least for me, but not one of the worst things. I"m sure when I was their age I did some things that seemed outrageous to my parents too heheheh I don't really see the point and wouldn't spend my time doing it, but it's not one of the things that bothers me.

I'm kind of with you. Those that like it fine, those that don't, that's fine to. I just am amazed that so many do so much with it. Doesn't anyone want to talk anymore? I mean if we keep texting, the world is going to become very quiet! Doesn't anyone like to chat and visit any more? I say that as here I am chatting and visiting via email and mylot......no spoken word here either! Guess it is all in the finger action of choice!

I don't see the point in text messaging. Unless your are mute, deaf, or in a situation where it will be dangerous to make a sound then you shouldn't need to text message. I rather just talk directly on the phone. I know everyone with a phone can talk on it but not everyone with a phone can text message especially those without the text message feature. You might as well send an e-mail if you want to text message.

And in reading and commenting back to everyone that posted here, I have to admit - i am not "with the times'. I bet the same conversation went around when email with a PC came about! I can hear it..."Can't they just pick up a phone and call instead of sitting there typing?" Now, its the same phrase, just what we are typing on is different! Oh well, to each his own! I'll just not text if I don't want to and no one can make me!!!!

I hate it, its a pain having to type a message on the phone. I like just calling the person up. But sometimes when i'm at work and cant talk on the phone i will text someone, but i never have a conversation using text messaging.

I'll do it for a quick note or something, but my daughter insists on "talking" to me via text and I hate it and just tell her to call if she wants to talk and I'll do same. She never calls, and if I call her, I get a voice msg!!! I have ato say I believe she is the Queen of texting!!!

I try texting ever now and then but I am very bad at it. I get confused on how to change numbers to letters, etc. I practice on my daughter, she is very patient with me. I hope to get better with time.

My daughter put me on her plan and she is the text message queen. But she just upgraded and renewed her account and bought new phones - buy one get one free so she got us each a new phone, smart thing she is got them identical so she can better help me when I ask her "how does this work or how do I do this?" Now the keypad is smaller, the keys are smaller and I have to memorize the alphebet cause i can't see the letters on the keys! And all the procedures are different on this phone so I have to learnt he whole thing over again, and good grief, can you just call me!

yes. i love to text message. i don't like talking on the phone, so texting is great for me. i have had unlimited texting on my last 2cell phones and so it's been good because i sometimes send out 500-800texts a month and receive up to 1000! could you imagine paying per text for that? eek. haha.

I don't. I think it's childish and a waste of time. It'd take me 10 minutes to type out a response rather than call someone, say it and be done in less than a minute or two. I don't subscribe to text messages and I delete any and all texts that I get. I don't want to pay 50 cents to read a message that says call me or something. If you need me that bad, call me or email me. All of my incoming calls are free from anyone at any number at any time, so it costs me nothing to take your call. Most of my friends know I'm anti-text and they don't text me, but occasionally I'll get one, delete it and then have to remind someone that I don't text.

I'm a texter. It's easier to do if your somewhere you don't want other people to hear yr conversation. I about fell over when I got a text from my 54 yr old dad though I didn't know he texted. Once you get used to it it is pretty easy.

For me, I actually prefer emails. Since I am online most hours, it is more convenient for me. Emailing also allows me to keep a record of the conversation - there is only that much space in the phone to store sms messages. Further, how much info can smses contain? They are only good for quick communication. So for the above, it's either sms or direct phone calls for me. Cheers!:D

If I had to choose I'd choose email. At least you can have the time to "talk" or get all you need to say out. IT just takes so long to tap it all out on texting and that tiny little screen to read what you've said after forgetting where you were in amongst all the tapping... wears me out! CALL ME!!!! I am only allowed 100 incoming and 100 out going per month for free (included in the plan) anything over costs. I am not going to pay any amount just to say "k" or "no" or "yep" or anything like that and that is what people respond with alot!

He, he, ...we are in the midst of a text generation...so, yup, I do text a lot...to family members, friends, even my superior...it's the cheapest and fastest way of communicating...our country is considered as the text capital of the world! LOL! So even the oldies are catching up with the younger ones, otherwise we lose contact with them. All it takes is just a little paradigm shift, plus a little practice, you will eventually learn the knack of it...try it.

I get 100 free in and 100 free out...after that it is 10¢ each way - that means the person that sends it is charged 10¢, for me to receive and read it is 10¢, for me to respond to it is 10¢ nad for the person I send it back to is 10¢ - that is 40¢ a text message! Is that cheap? I don't know. I'd rather they just call me on the land line!

Yes. I actually prefer to text because it's cheaper. It depends on who I call. I'd never text my mother because she doesn't know how to do it. With my boyfriend I have to pick him up from college every day so I tell him to text me instead. Sometimes if my battery is low I will text because if I called it would drain the battery quicker.

Its good for quick yes and no, but sometimes a yes or no doesn't answer the question! I get tired of sitting there tapping whena simple phone cal could rap it up in a minute! I am on my daughters account and it is 100 free text messages in and 100 out - to anyone. but the phone time is free between her and me and anyone else iwth that carrier. Just seems that a call would make it all easier!

My husband, both of his brothers and my own brother are all textaholics! They text constantly! I used to hate texting before I got my new cell phone with a slide-out keyboard. Texting a long conversation annoys me too. They usually know better than to text me only if it something short and sweet! They all prefer texting to an actual phone call though.

I don't have the keyboard style and that constant tapping 1 for a twice for b and three times for c and that same procedure on all keys, I always get to where I forget what I had said, was saying or which I had tapped first!! Insanity just looms over me on this! Although we do have a big problem with reception. First floor of a 3 story apartment building, we dont get any phone recep on the cells unless we go outside, so text always comes through, but I have a land line!! USE IT!!!!!

In my part of the world, Philippines is considered to be dominating in text messaging. Everyone is into it and this is perhaps it is still costly to call through the cellphone. When I was in Japan, we do text messaging, but since the price was fair enough both text and call, we usually call each other. It is useful to text message when you don't want your thoughts to be heard loudly and you prefer to send or receive messages silently. One other factor here in the Philippines is that most of us send short cut text messages or acronyms which became an issue with the department of education a few years back, because the new generation has a poor percentage grade with spelling. I saw this on TV when they did a research, and up until now this is the case. I am actually amused with my dad who's in the 60's who's fond of sending text messages. One interesting thing about him is that we end up calling him sometimes because his messages are too short(cut) which we can't understand! LOL! I sometimes like and dislike text messaging. Sending short messages is fine, but if you have to text on a whole idea, it takes me forever because I'm not the type who makes a lot of shortcuts but rather I spell the whole word which takes forever to press the buttons! LOL!

And you have to learn the text shorthand! you know, leave off silent letters and stuff like that. Then we go to type and type as we text and our typing is a mess! Talk about living in 2 worlds!

I send text messages. It's a quick and easy way to stay in touch with loved ones and friends. And as silly as it my sound it's a nice feeling to get a message. The hardest thing about texting sometimes is if you are texting several people at once sometimes you lose track of who you are talking to and what you are saying and send the wrong message to the wrong person lol.

Okay, stop showing off, garnet80! Multiple texts at once? You've got to be kidding!!!?! (LOL!) I'm lucky to get one out to one person at a time and only have to go back and fix 8 or 9 typos because I tapped twice instead of three times and got a B instead of the C!!!! I could have been done with the call by then if we'd just talked and now I have to wait for the reponse!!
