I'm sorry to have to say this but don't listen to your mom on that one. Reading, especially at young age helps develop your brain. It's not only acquiring knowledge, it helps your brain form connections more easily. Reading is great for your mind! It doesn't matter if you are reading fictional stories they stimulate your imagination and creativity. If you want to get ahead in life read as much as you can.

Reading a lot makes you a reader. That's basically it. Although, I don't see the problem with being a geek or a nerd. I think it's a pretty safe bet that Einstein was a geek. Maybe even a nerd.

I think it depends on the generation and your age. My daughter is 14. Up until about a year ago she was a closet reader. That means she did not let her friends know that she loved to read. She only read at home and even then she didn't do it very often. Now that she is in high school and sees all her friends now showing that they read and recommending books, she is hungry to read. She can spend all day in her room reading. My father was an avid reader. He got my mother reading. I followed in his footsteps. I love to read. I love books. I want to write and publish my own books. And hopefully I will some day. I would hate to think that people would avoid reading my books because they thought it was nerdy. Reading is just another hobby, but one that makes you smart and entertains at the same time.

that is not true. actually, if you read a lot of books you can acquire more knowledge and that doesn't make you a nerd. it's just that your smarter. don't believe that stereotyped label. it's just a label and it's not true. people who doesn't have anything better to do in their boring lives makes those kinds of label but that doesn't make them any better, they're just insecure! but always remember to also learn from experiences of reality not just what you read on books cause knowledge that is gain in books are different from the wisdom you gain from your own experience of reality. it's just incomparable. live life to the fullest, as they all say! Best of luck to you!

I don't think that reading makes you geek. I mean, with reading you tend to learn a lot which is the envy of most people. :)

just because they don't appreciate reading, they can call booklovers geeks or nerds..well, if they're gonna label you a geek or a nerd, at least you're way too smart than they are. people who use to brand others as geeks or nerds are either having a hard time reading books or just can't read at all! haha

Well it usually happens to anyone who holds a book almost all the time.I dont see anything wrong in that. However it seems that our society is biased that way.I have never seen a sportsperson being called names because he/she is really into sports.usually they are praised.I guess the real problem is that people dont want to know people and want to judge them anyway from a very narrow point of view and so this leads to such name calling. Also one more thing is that people who love books must also learn to interact with others and show to them that they are as normal as everyone else and can have a normal social life as everyone else.

I think that is not true on all cases. Reading is very good and can make us more knowledgeable. It can help us to think about many things in life. To know a lot of things we don't know. Why would you become a jerk with that? Let just say you become a smart person and a knowledgeable one. So don't believe on those person who tells you that reading can make you nerd or jerk. Read and read because it is good.

Honestly, I envy those persons who have actually developed a good reading habit. How I wish I was once trained to read so that I was used to reading now. Don't believe when someone says that you will be a geek or a nerd, it doesn't make you one either. Continue reading for it will enrich your knowledge for sure!

I don't think that frequent reading makes you a geek or nerd, but being either might make you read frequently, ha. That's kinda like asking if my bottom makes these pants look big. No, I don't think it means anyone is geeky. People read for all different reasons; to pass the time, to take a break from the noise and bustle, to educate themselves about topics, life and people. I just love to watch a good author net me in with word skill. With such varied reasons, not all readers can be nerds.

definitely nope, reading doesnt make you geek, nerd or what, it just help you acquire more knowledge.. books never affect if you will be marked nerd, geek or what its the attitude that let's others mark you as geek.. students nowadays mark their classmates geek or nerd if he/she dont socialize with them..

It really depends. If you think you are a geek then you are. reading books does not make you a geek but maybe if you spend the whole day doing just that then maybe. reading is a source of information however one has to choose his material wisely.
