Do you use q tips in your ears? - q tips in ears

They say you're not supposed to put anything smaller than your elbow in your ears! lol!!! I've been to the doctor complaining about my ears and she says they are fine but they are my ears and I think I have a problem. When I shower I always make sure to get into my ears but they always feel itchy "inside" to me so of course I get out the q tips and I'm always very careful not to go to deep and every time I end up with some wax. When I'm done with my little cleaning job my ears feel better but only for a short time then I feel like it needs to be done again. Do you use q tips when you clean your ears? Have you tried other methods of ear cleaning that works? Are you afraid to put q tips in your ears the way some people are?

I get that once in a while, and I use q tips to clean the outer ear, making sure not to go in too far. I know people say not to do that, but the outer ear is fine. If you feel like that constantly, it may be that your ears don't drain well. Talk with your doctor, they could flush out your ears. I've had that done before when I was sick, and they got really clogged. All they do is use a bulb syringe and put warm water in your ear. It softens the wax and it drains out with the water. Not a lot of fun, but so much better afterward.

I've actually had that done before and yes it was worth it.

I've always used Q-tips and have never had a problem although I've heard the elbow thing myself a million times. If I feel they need a 'deep' cleaning then I will use peroxide - a few drops, let it fizzel then empty it out. My ears feel 100% clean after that and have also never had any ear problems.

I have a bottle of peroxide that is pretty much used for nothing but cleaning ears. We keep a flexible straw right in the bottle - place your finger over the end and it holds peroxide in so you can easily pour it from the straw into your ear. I like to warm it up a little by letting the bottle set in hot water for a few minutes but as the kids got older they each decided that took too much time so just use it cold.

Hey stranger! I've never thought to use peroxide. I'll have to remember the next time I get in the shower....

I use ear buds (as we call them in the UK) and like everything else in life and the universe it is a matter of how you use them - sensible or not. With many things it is easier to simply ban them rather than go into convoluted explanations of what not to do and how to use them properly and how it can differ from one person to the next. I'm always amazed at the amount of crud that I get out of my ears! Where does it all come from?

I wonder the same thing! I take showers and wash my hair so where does it come from? Curious question don't you think?

I use q tips once in a while, but usually i just use the facecloth. You should try this method to see if it works for you. You can get it done at any homiopathic place, its called ear candleing. I have never had it done, but never had a problem with my ears. My friend has told me about it though. They stick some kind of candle on your ear, and it drawls your own wax out of your ear and collects on the candle. If your brave and willing to try new things, give it a shot and let me know how it turns out for you :)

uhh uhhh not me! - guinea pig
uhhhhh....I think I'll pass on the candle in my ear...lol...it sounds sort of counter productive to me. I want the wax out not put some more in! lol...but I can see the idea behind it. You will have to find yourself another guinea pig!

I use q-tips. I've read that it is bad for childrens ears so, I make my children use wipes instead.

It's just as bad for adults as it is for kids and I'm sure one day your kids will be doing it too....

I have problems putting anyting in my ears it bothers them. My husband uses Qtips to clean the water out of his ears after he takes a showe he has really small ear canals and the water gets trapped in there. I have always heard that you aren't suppose to put Qtips in your ears too but I know alot of people do.

You are right about that one. It sure looks like everybody does it and we can all still hear! I guess it all has to do with being careful when we do it.

Yes i sure do use Qtips to clean my ears.I have seen people before that took that statement for a fact and never put anything into their ears smaller than an elbow and trust me it is a very ugly site to behold.Lol I know that the ears can be cleaned with a Qtip, of course a person should use common sense as you do and not push the Qtip into their brain.I wonder how we expect to clean our ears if we do not use some means of cleaning? Are we going to let the wax seep out of our ears? I think not.I am not afraid to use a Qtip, when my ears have wax in them i want them cleaned, i wonder how doctors think you are to clean your ears if not with a Qtip?I am certainly not going to go to a ear specialist and pay out the But$ to have them do it ,and they do use Qtips as well. Some people that I know my hubby included has a heavy build up of wax so he has to clean his ears with a Qtip...I must add this too, a man i know has a hard wax buildup in his ears, something you cannot get to with a Qtip, so he has to see a ear doctor, guess what the ear doctor used to clean his ears? A water Pick,so now that he found that out he bought a water pick and now does it himself...

I use q-tips myself. I have tried the irrigation kits that the doctor reccommends - but those seem to cause me more problems.

My doctor has told me not to use q tips in my ears for years, ctry, and I had to laugh because when I was in to see him a few days ago I complained about an ear infection. Well, he looked inside them and said I must have been using q tips because he could see a tiny bit of cotton in the one that was bothering me. I couldn't lie my way out of that one, LOL. I try to avoid using them, but mine get awfully itchy sometimes also. My daughter's ex had a ghastly habit of digging in his ears with keys, ugh!

I typically don't use Q-tips to clean my ears. I use this plastic loop thing that my husband gets from the clinic he works at. I call them "ear diggers" and they are made to clean out the ear. The reason Q-tips are bad is because they can push the wax in father against the eardrum and cause it to become impacted. My husband had impacted ear wax once. Ouch.

I use them to clean my ears. I use them everyday. I also use them on my kids ears. We all have ears that wax like crazy and if I don't clean them out with a q-tip my sons ears will be dripping yellow wax by the time he gets home from school. I go into the ear canal, but I am careful not to go in too far.

I most definitly use Q tips on my ears. I Know your not supposed to but I don't know of any other way. I have tried using a very thin face cloth but it just doesn't do the trick. I never get in far enough. I hate it when my ears are wet inside. I have no choice but to use Q tips.

Isn't it funny how we all know we aren't supposed to do it but it's the only way we know!

Itchy inside your ears is fairly normal. This is the wax and drying skin. They recommend that you buy a flushing kit to flush out your ears. I always q tip them, everyday. I have a lot of problems with water getting inside and I often have itchy ears. I have a lot of ear problems, and I think the q tips help keep some of those problems at bay. Another issue with removing the wax is that it keeps your ears clean and traps bacteria...but that is just what I know (I wrote an article on ear wax treatment).

I also wait until after a hot shower. I don't mess with my ears often, but about once a month after a hot shower I will feel something loosen up. Then I proceed to usually dig out a chunk of earwax with the tip of my little finger. My crazy father takes it one step further and utilizes the rounded end of a paperclip. My mother advised me against this and said my father was an unusual human/marine that is stuck in his ways. Then she tells me not stick anything bigger than my finger in the ear...and not to press to hard.

I do and I use them on my kids, too, even though you aren't supposed to. My dad always did with me and my brother when we were kids so I grew up with that and I don't feel right if I don't clean my ears out after a shower. The wax is supposed to be good for your ears and using a q-tip can push the wax farther down (so I have been told) but I prefer the clean feeling and I am very gentle and careful cleaning out my ears and the kids. I do mine after every shower and the kids about once a week or so.

even when i was a kid i was using q tips to clean my ears and now i can't think of any other way to clean it. it was discussed in the movie prime that it really is bad for the ears, using q tips. but nonetheless i still use it because i got used to it and whenever i feel the itch in my ears, that what i also use to scratch it. just don't go deeper than the usual. :P

i do use them to clean my ears as i wear ear plugs to dull the noise when i go to sleep. i find that this adds extra gunk to your ears and i need to clean it out. (although i have heard many drs say you dont need to!!)

Yes I use Qtips after bath twice a week. I think that's the recommended frequency. Doing it too frequently will eradicate the wax, which is supposed to aid in hearing. But when my ears get itchy I'd use a Qtip again.

Hi,there! Actually I also wanna know what is the best way to clean ears.I don't use q tips very often for ears.I'm afraid it's not good for the ears if you clean them too often and it's not that good to use sth like that to "attack" the ears.Sometimes I use a small tool to clean but it's still not that perfect.I mean it could clean the ears, but it's also sth that could cause harm to them as well.I hope one day our human being can invent sth perfect for cleaning the ears:) Thanks for the discussion and have a nice day^_^
