Are you planning a vacation to a warm southern location this winter? Where?

We are housebound today due to a blizzard. We are expecting 2 feet (60 cm) of snow today. We are having an unusually snowy winter already. After a year where my husband had a heart procedure, my dad and my husband's dad had cancer surgery one week apart, we are planning a vacation to a warm southern location with my parents. We are looking at going to StMartin, StThomas, or Barbados. Do you have vacation plans this winter? Where do you like to go? What do you look for in such a vacation?

The cold weather can leave many people thinking about going on a vacation to a sunny location. Winter is a time of low temperatures that makes me dream of visiting a tropical island. I wen to St Lucia in the Caribbean once and thought it was so relaxing there. I liked seeing the white sandy beaches and the gently waving palm trees. I enjoyed seeing the lush landscape with all the green plants and flowers. I do so love to travel. In the winter months I would have to fly to somewhere outside Europe in order to get some sunshine. Good options would be Egypt, the Cape Verde Islands, India, Thailand or the Philippines. I adore doing island hopping and snorkeling coral reefs. I like to meet the local people, see a different culture and see native wildlife.

Ah, yes, that's a great idea! I like the way you describe what you like about the places you've visited. St Lucia is definitely somewhere we would consider visiting this winter, and relaxing is something we are looking for. So many people I know name Egypt as a place they've always wanted to visit! I guess the history and the pyramids are a strong attraction to many.

Yes, I hope that you will enjoy a wonderful winter vacation this year. There are so many lovely islands in the Caribbean that I would love to go to. Tobago and Grenada I would like to visit to relax by swimming in the warm sea and enjoying some snorkeling. Yes, I would love to go to Egypt to see the pyramids from the ground this time and see all of amazing Luxor. Christmas in Australia is an excellent thing to do in fantastic warm weather. Traveling in New Zealand at that time of year is also very special. I went on a cruise to see dolphins around the Bay of Islands on Christmas Day and up the Ninety Mile Beach on New Year's Eve. I love to South Pacific Islands but flying there takes ages and costs a lot. Samoa, French Polynesia and the Cook Islands are lovely places even more beautiful than the lovely Caribbean Islands. Wow!

Wow! The travel experiences you have had! Australia is definitely a dream vacation for me - but I have never even considered some of the wonderful tropical locations you describe. Maybe I need to dream a little bigger!

Yeah, I think I will spend the whole winter in a nice warm climate. Someplace where there are palm trees and the ocean is not far away and the sky is blue and the birds are singing. I can step outside barefoot and bask in the sun. Oops, I already live here in sunny Fl.lol I hope you get your vacation. I used to captain boats to the Virgin Islands. Go to the British Virgin Islands they are safer, cleaner, and more beautiful than the American islands. The Dutch Islands further south are nice too.

I didn't choose Fl. I am actually from here. Yeah, there are actually people who are from Fl. not just transplants.

Interestingly enough, many people from the city I live in are not from here either. My husband and I were both born and raised in this city, and we are the anomalies.

That sounds like a good plan to me. We usually have long, cold and dark winters as well. We live in Norway. I am not much of a winter person and like to get a break midwinter. The best one was a four week stay in Australia and New Zealand. when going on a winter vacation we usually like to relax on the beach, go for hikes and trips to explore the place, and we enjoy eatingout in the evening. usually the Canary Islands is where we go. It is the closest place where we are guaranteed a warm winter vacation. Does not look like we'll get to go this year. I am glad my man is out getting firewood right now. Hope you'll have a great vacation, and that everything goes well with all of you.

My partner's mother is taking us to South Africa this January and I'm so excited! I feel like we've won the lottery or something to get a trip to such an exotic place! We're going to Cape Town at the end of the month and even better, we're going to be there for my 25th birthday! It's certainly going to be a birthday I'll always remember, I'm sure of that. We're also going to go on one of the safaris so we can see the animals. There's also a penguin reserve not far from us. How odd is that? Seeing penguins in South Africa! I can't wait! Usually the period after Christmas is one of anti-climax for a lot of people - not the best time to have a birthday as no one else feels like celebrating anymore. This year is going to be spectacular though! The warmth is going to really help my bad health too, I'm sure of it. How can you feel ill when you're in such a magical place? Sorry for gushing at you, but I'm just so thrilled!

Congratulations to you! If I were going to South Africa, I would gush (and be thrilled) too! I have never been anywhere near there, or anywhere as exotic. What a great way to celebrate your 25th birthday. I'm sure the safari experience will be one you will never forget. The penguins will be amazing too! I wish you good health and happiness for your vacation - write back or start a new thread when you get back to tell us all about your magical vacation.

Thanks for the kind wishes! You're very lucky to be in a warm tropical country! Yes, Barbados is definitely in the running as our potential winter vacation. Maybe I should take some time to tune into the travel channel before we finalize our travel booking.
