Online Book Swapping

Canada
December 18, 2007 12:01pm CST
To my fellow readers who participate in swapping their books online, does anyone know of any site that allows Canadians to participate? The only site I was able to find was bookcrossing.com however it's not exactly a 'book swap', it's more like a 'book treasure hunt'. My daughter reads so much, I was really hoping to find a swapping site. Any suggestions? Thanks

Well this is kinda cool i live in halifax and my daughters love to read as well so your post was really awesome. How old is your daughter...I have an 11 year old step daughter, a 7 year old who is loving books of anything really, and a 2 year old but i don't think she will be doing much of her own reading....yet anyways i read to her all the time. But i will try those sites as well but how do book swapping sites work anyways? I would be very interested in that thanks book swavy

Hey Hey neighbour! I'm in NB, close to Fredericton! My daughters are 12 and 8. My oldest is the reader although the youngest is starting to catch on! Keep reading to your little one... My oldest started reading when she was 2, no kidding... and was reading fluently by age 4. On her 5th birthday she read Stewart Little and she hasn't stopped since LOL You can list books you want to give away on these book swapping sites and then choose which you want to receive. You pay for the shipping of the books you send out only. BookCrossing is also interesting as it's more of a treasure hunt than a swap! I just got some alert of new books available in Fredericton... I just might have to go take a drive! LOL

With all of the holiday buzz going on, I haven't had a chance to go hunting yet. I'm hoping to be able to in the new year. It's too bad that you can't get out there to do some hunting of your own! Have a peaceful and merry Christmas

My sister lives in fredricton, She showed me bookcrossing before but i don't drive myself and don't live close to where any of the books were located...my husband works way to much to ask him to go driving around looking for books...he isn't a reader so doesn't get the whole idea of the love of books.lol Hope you had some luck finding some books later

I am a member of bookcrossing.com and it certainly doesn't get you books if you live in a town like I do. Once in awhile I will get alerts as to books being released - very rarely do I ever find them. And I have released books that have not been acknowledged as being caught. There is a site called freesell - at least I think that is the name of it. I know of several people in Ontario who participate. It is not a "selling" site but giving away stuff you don't want to people who DO want them. You don't necessarily swap item for item. You just give away stuff to people who want them. You keep an eye on the site for stuff you want and then contact the "seller" and make arrangements for pick-up. I know someone who is on there. I can check and get the exact site link if you'd like.

Is this a site for books? or general items? I am a moderator for a site called FreeCycle here in NB and it's rare they post books however I have received a few. I also live in a small town however I'm close to Fredericton and there seems to be some activity from bookcrossing. I signed up, I'll try it out and see what happens from there. I did find a ton of books my daughter would love to read but they are all in the states :(

Yes, it is Freecycle, for general items. I don't know of any sites strictly for books other than bookcrossing.com. Sorry.

Not a problem! Thank you for recommending FreeCycle. That is always a great place to look for items!

You should look into bookmooch.com I'm pretty sure it's open to anybody in the world, but not everybody is willing to ship to other countries. Bookmooch works on a point system. You get points for listing and shipping books others and you use those points to mooch books from others.
