What's Wrong With People? Baby Dumped In Dumpster

It's getting to be really pathetic that this occurrence is happening more and more, where a newborn baby is found in the trash. Like what is with these women who give birth and then consider that human life so disposable? The worse of it, is the fact that IT HAPPENED IN MY VERY NEIGHBORHOOD!! Found an article relating to it: (Quote) ..."Christopher Moncada was walking home after skateboarding with his brother and two friends in Elmhurst last night when he heard crying coming from an industrial-sized garbage bin. One of the boys jumped into the bin and came out holding a paper bag. A soft wailing was still coming from inside. "We realized there was a baby in the bag," said Moncada, 15, of Elmhurst, after finding the baby about 8 p.m. "We were shocked." Moncada said the baby, a girl only hours old, was naked and had two quilts wrapped around her body and head, making it nearly impossible to breathe. She had been put head-first into the paper bag, he said. After they unwrapped her, she moved an arm and continued to cry, Moncada said. One of the boys called 911, and two others ran to a local police station house. By the time they returned, the baby, which still had its umbilical cord and blood on parts of its body, was being taken away in an ambulance. Moncada's two friends went with the baby to the hospital to make sure it was all right, he said. The 4-pound baby was slightly hypothermic, said Giovanni Caballero, 39, one of the emergency medical technicians who took care of the girl. Police said the baby was in stable condition at Elmhurst Hospital Center last night. Police immediately began a search for the baby's mother, canvassing the neighborhood around 93-18 Lamont Ave. and asking about girls in the neighborhood who might have been trying to hide a pregnancy, or looking for a way to get rid of a baby. Police dogs were also searching the area late last night. Bertha Mendoza, 26, who lives on Lamont Avenue, where the baby was found, said last night it was awful to leave a child out in the cold. "It's incredible, it's bad, there's no words to say more," Mendoza, who has one child, said in Spanish. "There are so many places to leave it." The baby is likely to be put in protective custody after it is released from the hospital, police said...." The entire article is here: http://www.newsday.com/news/local/newyork/ny-nybaby185505979dec18,0,1144116.story What the hell is wrong with society anyway? So many women are dying to have children who can't, and these women who CAN have babies just trash them like garbage.

Hi pye, I unfortunately have heard quite a few stories like these and it gets me really upset how someone could just throw a baby away. They are going to be making safe houses all across Canada soon thank goodness. A safe house is where a mother can have her baby and hand it over no questions asked except maybe about family medical history, and things like that. The child can then later be adopted, and have a chance at being part of a family! I really hope it works because it is so sad to hear of unwanted children. Sorry this is a bit off topic, but I tried to leave a comment on your page but it wouldn't work so I will say it here "Merry Christmas my dear friend! Best wishes for 2008!" Luv & Hugzz, PurpleTeddyBear.

I wish they would set up more "safe houses" here, I mean gee, you think in a large metropolitan area like the NYC area there would be something like that. But even without them, there are so many alternatives for a woman rather than just dump the poor newborn like that, and especially in 20-degree weather! OT--Merry Christmas to you too- :)

I think every province in Canada, and state in the US should have at least one safe house in each major city. I agree though that either way the mother should have somehow tried to find a better alternative then a dumpster in the middle of December. I know I could never do that, it is inhumane so I could never do that! For arguments sake even if I did manage to do it I know my concience and guilt would eat me alive!

That is terrible! There are so many safe places to bring babies that don't even question the mother - why would someone do that! It is just sick!

Your telling me it's sick. Safe Houses were invented for a reason! Their is no reason, excuse, or justification for it at ALL!

Probably a classic case of it being a young teenage woman who was afraid of her family finding out?? That's what usually is the case

That is so sickening it honestly makes me feel physically ill! Those boys were certainly in the right place at the right time or that poor baby would have been just one more tragic statistic. What's so disgusting is there are so many places mothers can take a baby they don't want and there won't be any questions asked. But, it's just easier and quicker to place the poor baby in the trash. I can't believe there are such wastes in this world. There's nothing more I can add to this discussion, Pye, it just makes me sick. From our other posts here on myLot, there are many people such as you and me and many of our friends here who are more caring of animals than some "mothers" are of their own flesh and blood! I sure hope they find the monster that did this and deal with her accordingly! Annie

Oh yes, it does seem people will care more for animals. Make you think, who is the "animal" and who is the human if you get my meaning. Unless an newborn animal is sick and the mother animal senses it, even animal don't abandoned their babies.

I'm sorry, but this is the result of abortion. If its alright to kill your baby before its born - why not right afterward? I saw a bumper sticker that said "Abortion is a blood sacrifice to convenience." I've never seen the difference between infanticide & abortion, obviously other people don't either - and don't have a problem with it.

Sadly, its a case of, "if its okay to kill a baby before its born, why not after?" As in partial birth abortions? So, the baby is completely delivered except the head - so we can still kill it. That means to some people that "well, why not just after?" I'm not saying it isn't sick and wrong, its just that by making people cavalier about babies before they are born, it can make some that way after they are born. Soon we'll be killing our old people because they are inconvenient.

I actually happen to be pro-choice..not that I would have ever considered abortion myself, but if a woman doesn't want the baby, and doesn't want to carry it to term to give it up for adoption, then maybe someone like this should've opted for abortion. I mean, like what is the point of having the baby, only to dump it then?

I agree with you 100% on this, pyewacket. The truth here is that people have lost love for one another and they place little value on a human life. They don't call this the "throw-away generation" for nothing. There is a certain sector in our society who believe that everything is disposable, and you can just go out and replace it with something new whenever you want. It was Fate that placed those young men there, in that particular place, at that time. I am so happy the little girl was saved, and hopefully she will be placed with loving caring parents who will appreciate her.

Yes that was a real case of those boys being there at the right time and place. When they found the baby it was about 20-degrees here. Guess it wasn't that baby soul time to die, right? They are calling the girl Christina at the hospital since it's so close to Christmas

You know I hear these stories so much that I am becoming numb to them. It really dosnt matter that we think these people are sick and demented the problem still remains that people are not educated on the fact that all they have to do is drop the child off at a hospital, police station or fire house and no questions will be asked. At least they will be at a safe haven. Lack of education is our down fall.

That is horrible!! I cannot imagine putting a live baby in there. I am glad someone found it and it is doing fairly well. I cannot understand why they don't take them to a hospital or police station or something.

What made it "creepier" if you want to call it that was the fact it happened near me in my own neighborhood. I'm right down near the hospital that they took the baby, and there were newsmen trucks all over the place when I went out today

Well I have one baby and it pains me to hear cases like this. On the one hand I think that a person who could leave a newborn in a dumpster has to be heartless or evil. But on the other hand I am trying to find reasons for why they could do it. Very young? Shame at being pregnant and unwed? Although in this day and age its not a big thing. Sever postnatal depression? Who knows. These are explanations, not excuses. Either way, my prayer is that the child will be in a good home by the new year. I know its not possible to say unless we know the full facts but I hope the mother or whoever dumped the baby never gets her again.... as the woman said, there were so many places she could have put the child but in a dumpster?

Yes, at least with those two boys finding the baby, she'll get a chance at life now. Yes some might think in this day and age, an unwed, young girl who gets pregnant is no big deal, but who knows, maybe she came from a culture where it is some kind of taboo

Its sickening, and its not the first time its come up (even mylot had another news/case of this happening elsewhere). Its all sick and you make the takehome points Pye. I don't have much of anything to add. There are even laws in almost every state that allow women to abandon the child at hospital/facility no questions asked. Even then if it wasn't in place, this is still a barbarous event and I really can't understand it!

Yes, I don't know why if a woman who doesn't want the baby doesn't take them to "safe" houses that are usually all over the place. I understand women can leave a baby at a hospital, even firehouse and no questions asked.

After I read this, I went over and gave my 6 week old a big hug and kiss. I can't imagine anyone doing that to a poor innocent baby. Are they that cruel and heartless to leave a baby in 20 degree weather? Apparently so. She just let that little life grow inside her probably knowing the whole time what she was planning to do. I don't like to even leave my cats in the cold! I am so glad that those boys found her and she made it out alive. At least, this story has a happy ending.

I think those girls are in shock when it happens. They are left alone and afraid. Maybe very young, too young to understand anything besides father and mother anger. As bad as it is, parents, society and religion is fully responsible for this....

Yes, I think one could blame society and "standards" that are crammed down the throats of women n general, especially from various cultures. One poster here, not from this country said this is a very common occurrence as it's taboo for young girls to become pregnant, so throw away babies are the norm

well i am really very shocked and surprised to read this story.it seems that now people dont have heart in them.how can a mother do this to the child.she does not deserve to be a mother.she must be punished for this acto f hers so might be some others who are so also doing some similar kinds of nuisance with their babies stop doing this.i mean how can a lady be so heartless !!!!if at all she did not wanted the baby she could have brought it in this world and if she brought than she might atleast give it to an orphange if she did not wanted that child.how can she throw it in a garbage.its true that human benig first needs to be human to be called as human being.
