Hamster and cats - friends or foes?

December 20, 2007 6:31am CST
I've got a hamster at the moment and am considering getting a kitten in the next few months, are they likely to get on? I appreciate that a small scuttling hamster may seem very tempting to a hungry cat, but what if the kitten has grown up always knowing the hamster? Could they just be friends or would I have to always keep them separate if I wanted the hamster to have a free run?

I don't know if this would count, but I have a gerbil, cat, dog, and at least 8 hermit crabs. My gerbil and cat don't get along. Every time my cat hears my gerbil running on her gerbil wheel, he runs and tries to slap at it. Gerbils, hamsters, and cats are usually foes.

I suppose it's pretty tough for any cat to repress their hunting instincts when it comes to small running rodents!

I agree hamsters are adorable but since they are so small I don't think I would trust a cat...especially a young kitten around one. You would have to make sure they didn't run into each other if you were to let the hamster out and that would be a tough one so I don't think I would do it. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
