beggars - beggars, begging for a living

everyday there's some beggars always passed by in our small variety store begging for money. Before i give them money coz i feel pity for them, but they abuse our kindness, everyday they beg with the same face, as if they're not ashamed. I remember this day, when 1 beggar came to our store i decided of giving him a whole bread instead of money. He did not want the bread, he wants money. And when i give him money, he just use it to buy cigarrettes. How irritating isn't it? he begs for making his life shorter. And come to think of it, we work hard to live but them they just beg to live. I guess giving them can't help coz they would do it for living, if we don't give they might find job instead of begging money.

yes,now these beggars just do begging as their job.i was told that their income are much more than me and greatly surprised until one day i saw a beggar communicated with others by cellphone,we define the one having nothing, going homeless as begger, but what i've seen shows that they're cheaters not real beggars.

I know this and met many many times.Sometimes I gave them some money, sometimes gave them things. My husband never support me to do this, coz they never cherish our kindness.Yeah,I heard that they are a big organization, and it's their job.I can understand some old people to do this kind of job,but young people, why do they do this? This kind of people make me so angery. So I stop my kindness. That's a little despair.

Begging in Thailand, and in other Asian countries is a big, well organized business. I was in Chiang Mai last week with my Thai wife. We were sitting at an eating place in a market when this male beggar sat next to my whife looking for money. I told her to buy him a meal, which she did. He selected nad we paid. We were ready to leave, when he sat down, so we moved on to buy some things for family and friends. Before his meal had been put down the man followed us and still asked for money. The problem is there is no way of telling whether they are part of an organization, or are genuine.

If the person wouldn't accept the loaf of bread and still begged for money, I would have told them they weren't in dire need if they didn't accept the bread. In our town we don't see people begging.

A lot of these beggars are professional beggars.. and they belong to a syndicate. I don't give beggars money. I would rather they work as toilet cleaners, or something than to sit by the streets and beg. Anyway it's an offense in my country to beg. :)

I dont' give. Hate to pass up a needy person, but you just dont know these days! Few years back it was a huge pan-handling problem here in my town about people standing on the exit ramps of freeways (so they had a captive audience while the light was red) and hold signs, "work for money" or "hungry, need money" or "homeless, need food". Every ramp had one on each corner. They were other areas of the stret to... always at a light for a captive audience. Turns majority of those were not only not homeless but made quite a nice sum of money doing this! Some were making like $25 an hour pan-handling (while I slaved for $10) The police got involved and stopped it after awhile, but you just can't be sure.

It's really hurts when the beggar abuse our kindness. He seems so pity and we give the money with sympathy and then, you found it's just a trap.He took his glasses off and check the money... really angry. We haven't insight to the truth,so just regards it a style of life,we want, then do it,don't like to do,then pass~~

i think some people beg because their relations wouldn't give them money for some of these usage. others too beg because they have no one to give to them to live on. so they're compelled to beg in order to live. i can remember some parents hid somewhere and asked their little children to go and beg on the street. whenever they're given money they run back to them and give the money to them and go back to beg again. see the nonsense.

Yes you got that right! The best gift is one that promotes self sufficiency, rather than a gift that makes them dependent on you. There's an English proverb that says it all- "Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime!"

even we feel pity about them, i think we should'nt give them, because if we give them we just teach them how to become lazy.

If you have the same people every day coming to your store, maybe you can help them find a job. I am all for helping people, we have been helped many times in the past, but it's like this saying I love, "If you continue to fish for the man, he will come to depend on you, instead, teach him to fish himself.." I hope that helps..:)

They may just move on to find someone who gives more easily... but then they wouldn't be bothering you, so that would be good! For some people, it is easier to hope others have kind hearts, so that they don't have to work to survive. But the rest of us do work hard for what we have, and we should only give it away by choice and with an open heart. If you aren't happy giving to them... and by all means, if they are needy they WILL take food!... then don't feel like you must. Charity can and should have limits.

I try to be lead by my promptings as to whether to give to them or not (the small still voice inside you is always right). For most, begging is their job, but totally tax-free. I generally do not give them anything unless prompted to do so. If I do give, I learned to give food if they say they are hungry, clothing if they need a change of clothes; pay for a room just as long as hotel agrees not to refund my money to anyone except me. I know quite a few people who are professional beggers, therefore I know that they prefer your money so they can support their habits (gambling, drinking, smoking, and other frills on the public). The ones that beg inappropriately make things difficult for thoses who really need our help; that's why I try to look beyond outstretched hands and see inside their hearts. I just pray that I help those who need to be helped rather than throwing away my hard earned money on scammers. Bless all those who really need and are not too proud to ask for they are truly an inspiration to me.

About three or four years ago I had the thought that it maybe useful and proud of giving the geggars money or foods. But now I changed my opinion because there are so many beggars in our city. When I walking on the road, there willcome many beggars in which have the young man and woman.I con't believe they could not keep their living depend on there powerful ares. Also, there have two sayings of beggars in my country:(1) is that beggars can earn more money than the workers which hard work in their job; (2) is based on the first one:there have many instituations make money from the beggars who are children cheated or robbed from and force them to beg. So I choose giving the money to the beggars who are old enough and without the ability to live themself.

Hi flomikren, previously I used to give money to the beggars but I had a nasty experience of late. When some poor boy came to me for money I gave them thinking that they are in real need but the same thing happened. He started smoking in no time! It had left me speechless. Now, I have decided to NOT to give money but to help them with food and material.

The sad thing is that begging has become big business. I work in the Middle East there are alot of beggers. Most of them are young kids, some don't look to be more then 5 or 6 years old. They should be in school, but their out begging all day and half the night. I stopped giving money to beggers a long time ago. I give to charities instead.
