My Big Fat Baby Boy

My baby is only one year and three months old but he weighs about 18 kg. He doesn't look that fat because he is quite tall for his age. I am just a little worry about his weight. I am not too sure whether he is obese or not. Our personal doctor told me that he is still OK and I need to look after his food intake when he reaches two years old. In fact, he doesn't eat too much but he has a very good appetite and is a little bit 'particular' about his food.He needs 8 boxes of milk powder (700g each box)every month and it costs quite a lot of money *smiles* What should I do to stop him from being obese? Any suggestion?

Wow... your baby is really big... my baby is now 20 months old but she only weighs 10 kgs... i am so frustrated with her weight... but the doctor said that it is quite normal since my husband and i are both thin... i weigh only 110 lbs and only got fat when i was pregnant... But in your case... if you and your husband or like most of the family members are quite big or gains weight easily... then there is nothing to worry about since your baby's condition is hereditary... but i agree that upon reaching 2 years old... you should try to control what he is eating... less sweets but more fruits and vegetables...

Well, i agree with your doctor... my baby is very active... and we can hardly keep up with here running around, dancing all the time... her being active is definitely a factor why she is not the big... although she is getting taller and taller by the month... i hope your baby can shed a few pounds soon...

Hello aseretdd, Thanks for your response and sorry for my late reply. Two days ago I went to see a doctor as my baby has a flu. The doctor told me that my boy looked a little bit overweight. He is at 82cm right now and weighs almost 20kg. I am worried now but the doctor said there is nothing I can do for the time being. He believes that my boy will shed some kilos later as he is very active.

since your doctor said that hes fine then nothing to worry about..you have to let the child start eating some solid food so that the milk intake will lesser down in that way you can save some money on milk and it will makes him more stronger specially if more vege on the diet..

Hello vanities, Thanks for your advice. I was glad when the first time I checked, the doctor said every thing is normal with him. Two days ago, I went to see a doctor again as my son got a flu and the doctor looked at him and told me that he looked overweight.

I think it may be just babay fat. Don't be so worried. What I have heard from my parents that my elder brother was so fat at younger gae. But later it was all ok. Don't overfeed him and make him active when he grows up a bit.

Hello subha12, The doctor told me that he will shed some kilos while growing up as he is quite an active boy. I hope he is right. My baby doesn't really eat too much and quite choosy about his food but I think, it is the milk powder that makes him fat. Just imagine 7-8 boxes of 700g milk powder every month!

The important thing is to avoid junk food. Give fruit and raw vegetables for treats. Less pasta, unless it is whole grain. He is still pretty young to cut back his milk intake, but when he is a little older you can give him less milk and more water. I had to put my firstborn on skim milk when she was two years old. It is hard when a child is a picky eater. But the doctors always say that if fruit and vegetables are available and junk food isn't, eventually they will eat the healthy foods. I have a granddaughter who is five and she only wants chicken nuggets, hot dogs, or pasta. But she isn't fat at all, so I guess her parents aren't concerned. Kids often outgrow that picky eating.

I think you dont need to worry right now. Your baby is too young for it and now that the doctor has confirmed that he is health, you should take a sigh of relief! Obesity is certainly becoming a big problem these days. Your concern can't be blaimed. I think you should keep an eye on his eating habbits once he grows up. Keep him away from too much chocolates/sweets, fast food and include fruits and vegetables in his diet. Make sure he drinks a lot of water and plays around/does some physical work. And hey, don't ever count how much your baby eats.. be happy for your one *Smiles* My best wishes for you and your child!

Hello amitksing, Thank you for your advice. I am more than happy that he is healthy and as the doctor said before, I will keep track of him diet when he reaches two years old. He seldom gets sick and he is very active. That is a good sign at least :) Thank you for your response.

If your doctor said your son is fine, then feel released. Perhaps your son really grows better than anyone:) If it is possible, please ask him to eat more vegetables and fruits. So perhaps it will be helpful.

Probably, he is quite young right now, it's probably just baby fat, but as he is growing, if he stays active, even into his teen years, he will be alright! As long as he stays active, not very much sugar in his diet, I think he will maintain a healthy weight!

Hello musicman6, That was what the doctor told me. He said it is OK for him as he is just over a year old. I should watch his diet when he reaches two years old. I went to see a doctor last Sunday as he got flu and when the doctor weighed him again, he put on one more kilo... :)
