I started Tae Kwon do about 4 months ago and I am 44. I am loving it and finding it is totally improving my life. On top of that I am actually quite good at it, especially the sparring. Anyone else, who is over 40 starting Tae Kwon do and is there any challenges ahead I need to be aware of.

i know many ppl over the age of 40 who enjoy full contact sports.. only thing with being over 40 is your bones.. drinks lots of milk and keep your bones strong at their best.. with being over the hill sort of speak you are more prone to injury... check into glucosamine phospate (sorry its its spelt wrong) to build the cartilidge and joints up... it has done wonders for the cartilidge in my knees from having a few surguries... good luck to you and happy sparring...

Thanks for the response. Luckily I was already active in sport as I play soccer as well. My concern has been(which is the same as with soccer) is the healing process. When I have picked up a very minor knock in soccer, it now takes me a week to recover. So far with TKD I have been lucky. Although, learning to fall for me has been very tough(confidence problem along with height(I'm 6.2)). I'll check into the glucosamine phosphate(looked up the spelling!).

As with any sport, incuding TKD, stretching is a very integral part. I have found that through the years, if I didnt stretch I was very, very sore afterwards. Properly stretching and warming up will reduce the healing time with most injuries, knocks and dings you will pick up. Stretch properly and I feel any "down-time" you get will be very short.

Stretching and warm-ups are a major part of each of my tkd lessons. I would say that 15-20 minutes at the begining are used for that. I am feeling better each time I go and I can lift my leg higher into the air that I could just 3 months ago.

Hi! I'm Luis. I'm from Argentina but I've just moved to the US (Rockville, MD). I hold a Black Belt II Dan in Tae kwon-do ITF. I'm 37 years old. I think that the only challenge ahead you need to be aware of if that you don't compete with anyone during your martial artist life. May be you go into a tournament, ok, that's not the meaning of tae kwondo. So, my only advice is to try to be better compared to you. I hope you understand my english!. Good luck with your training. Peace and God Bless. Taekwon!!

If a person is a newly practitioner on that kind of arts specially on that age thier goals is not to compet anymore but to learn about self defense and the same time exercise.
