What is a bag to you?

Bags these days seem to carry (excuse the pun) more significance than just being a container for one's things. Just a casual count along the streets or in public transport will show that many women have branded bags. Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Coach... the list goes on. How about you? Are your bags solely bought for its function? Are the main considerations when you purchase a bag first it's space, compartments , and secondly how it looks? Most people these days, especially women, enjoy buying branded bags because it looks good on them. Some may say that it lends an air of professionalism. Or perhaps it makes them feel good about themselves. What do you think about this trend? Do you own branded bags too? I don't, but think I might succumb soon haha.

I'm not into the designer bag thing - why pay hundreds of dollars for a name on a bag that isn't any better than one without. I tend to go for 'function' first, I love pockets and compartments - so much easier to organize and find things when needed, then size - everything has to fit, lastly would be looks I suppose. Not a priority in my life - I've carried the same plain black bag for over a year now and probably will until it 'breaks down'.

LOL - that's why I carry the same bag until it wears out once I get stuff in the compartments I eventually learn where I put what. If I change bags I have to start all over again. I just have more important things to do with my time :)

I don't own any branded bags but I do like to buy good looking bags and spend a bit more than usual on a nice looking one. It's just because I count it as part of the outfit and it serves as an accessory purpose. I don't necessarily think that only branded bags look good, indeed, I bought a few cheap bags at Mango before and everyone says they are fabulous! *smiles*

I don't have branded ones. I know someone who is crazy about branded make ups, I use regular make ups and she doesn't look much better than I. So there it goes with everything else I don't care branded or not I buy what I can afford. I like cute bags though but most of the time they can't carry everything.

that's true. sometimes it's not the brand - it's how you carry the make-up or the bags. :)

For the first time in my life I bought expensive bags...I went to what they call a butterfly party and that is what they sell...the are designer but I can't remember who...they will be delivered soon. I buy a bag partically for a fashion statement! Something that matches my shoes...and also consider how much I can get into them. I try to not carry so very much but when I travel alot I like to also carry my camera etc. The bags I just bought are both very pretty. A lime green one for spring and a camel color just to have a new color. I have been stuck on buy black or brown for a long time!

just bought the FIRST branded bag in my entired life. the main reason why the bag attracted me was a magazine article about how the bag strap can hold a maximum of 231lbs of weight. this is really attractive to me as i have a few bags' strap broken. also, this bag is super roomy and that's important to me. i basically use my bag as a shopping bag. i chuck everything i buy into my bag so that i don't need a plastic bag. i have a wallet from the same brand and it's more than 10yrs old. not a single stitch broken or unsightly scratches on the wallet, despite me being a extremely 'violent' person. sometimes it's really worth it to pay for quality. imagine my bf goes through a wallet every year or so. after 10yrs, the amt he spent on wallets can buy a few wallets from this brand already. :p

I think they can tell you a lot about a person, weither or not the have the designer bags or the wal-mart bags can tell you how rich a person is. By the color and style of the bag you might find out about a persons personality.

yes most people form impressions from what someone is carrying. so someone poor might splurge on a branded bag so that people treat them better.

I personally find it is over hyped. Just the other day, I was at CenterPoint, the favorite haunt of rich Indonesians tai tais. There was this elderly lady (think grandma age) who had a very thickly made up face, wearing white three quarter tights and some very fancy shoes. Her hair was messy, I guess it is to follow those trendy messy look. Well, it looks like she just work up or something. She was wearing this t-shirt that looks like what one would wear to the market on a weekend. She was carrying this huge Guess bag, a blue and white one, if I remember correctly. Some how, the look of professionalism just doesn't spell it right for her. The combination is just so odd. What matter most is not the brand of the bag. But the way you carry it. How you match it with your outfit is more important that what brand you carry. If only I had taken a picture, then you would understand what I mean.
