animals and the law...

hello all! This is a pretty debated subject in my country (Romania). The animal rights. The goverment issued a law that punishes those to misstreat an animal. I think that's good. That's VERY GOOD! That's how it is in all (or at least most) civilised countries. BUT!!!!! I think that in all civilised countries (or, again, at least most of them) there aren't any (or, not many) "homeless" animals. Here, at least in my city, there are about 1-2 THOUSAND!!!!!!! homeless dogs (and i think more cats). I mean, i should kick a dog...i know, that's not even nice, and now it isn't legal. And, if i do it, i will have to pay for that. BUT! what about if a dog attacks me? If a dog bites me pretty hard...who will pay for this? The goverment sure won't. That's how it is in Romania. There are a lot of old folks (especially women) who take care of the homeless dogs. If the dog pound takes them away, they pay the releasing fee and so, the dogs get back on the street. Well, in my opinion, THOSE are the criminals. I mean, there are too few people who walk on the street, see a dog and say "hey! why don't i kick this dog?" or "hey! why don't i throw a rock at this dog?"...but, there are many people who get bit by these dogs (in my city, about 40-50 DAYLY!!!!), and i find it natural to defend yourself (any way you can) from these dogs. What do you think? Are there any "homeless" dogs in your country? (please specify your country). Take care!

Yes I agree I believe the laws for animal cruelity should be as harsh as if the act was done to a child, as animals can not speak for themselves, it should be up to the rest of us to protect them...I say good on Romania.

hello! thanx for replying...but, did you read all my post? i think that the goverment should first take all the homeless animals of the streets, and then punish those who misstreat animals. If i'm correct, in countries where this law is pretty harsh, they take dogs (for example) off the streets, and, if no one wants them, they ...euthanasiate (sorry if i misspelled this) (well, kill)them... and i agree to that.

This happens here in Australia as well, with education for people and the laws we hardly ever see stray dogs, but with mouse and rat problems we have here i think a certain amount of stray cats should be allowed, as I have noticed mice and rats are becoming amuned to the bates and too clever for the traps, I have seen rats the size of a small cat here and my former cat caught 17 mice in one night at a neighbours place....

Hi thebeing, here in the philippines, we have cities that have animal pounds, they took care of stray cats and dogs also chicken and mice. all we need to do is just call the animal pound and they will take care of it. Also, if the owner is there when the animal bits you, that person is going to pay for it. Pay for all the bills and etc. About throwing rock or kicking the dog, well...hell yeah! if they were about to bite you..who is stupid enough not to defend themselves? From my understanding... if an animal attacks people, that animal should be put down. why wait for someone to get injured? it's not just the bite, but the rabbies and all the trouble it will cause. but if an animal doesn't attack anyone, maybe it just wants a home..who knows, that animal might defend you from those stray dogs. right? :) But if a dog even dare get near me??? oh hell yeah! that dog's gonna fly away with my kick! I won't throw rocks at them because since they are fast, before I even bend to pick up a rock, they might already have taken my hand! Take Care!

Being from Romania myself, I totally see your point. I have nothing against the poor creatures... In fact humans are the only responsible for the situation. People are those who left the animals on the streets because they can't or won't take care of them anymore. What I don't understand is why the people who protect stray dogs don't take them home. Maybe it's because of the mess? An old proverb says that whoever likes dogs must accept the fleas... On the other hand the organizations that fight for animal rights don't seem to do something good for those animals except... talking. I'm not asking to kill them but they could be taken somewhere, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, sterilized.

Well I'm pretty sure their is homeless animals anywhere in the world. As for me, if I am for or against animal rights, I am against. I mean I... well I am against hitting or mistreating the animals but as for being used for food I am for that because I believe that animals were put in this world for food, (I'm not saying that, that is their purpose) I mean I wouldn't eat dogs or cats but no one defends chickens or cows when they're being butchered so I'm not really sure. I mean I'm against mistreating and abusing so... yeah.

well that tough huh!!in our place that is the philippines..have some laws on animal rights..of course we have all the right to depend ourselves if attack by animals..in every law there is always an exception on it ..not so i guess since the proper authority have been trying to clean up our city of dogs who are astray to minimize the people getting hurt by the dogs bite..

I live in the UK and it is known as a place that loves animals. There are many animals charities like the RSPCA that makes sure people don't treat animals cruelly. There are many care homes for dogs, cats and other animals that are homeless. People visit them and choose a new pet to take home. Most often the care home will check out that the new home is suitable and that the new owners will care well for the pet. I have two dogs that I bought from dog breeders. The law says that they must have my name and address on them. They have a circle on their collars with this information on. They both have pet passports and so they are micro chipped. It must be awful to get bitten my a street dog in Romania. There is a law about dangerous dogs in the UK. Street dogs are rare in my country but there are homeless cats. My mum took in two homeless cats. I love animals and always treat animals with kindness. Take care.
