Saving pennies and quarters...

I know i am not the only one guilty of this... but i have this habit of saving .25 centavo coins without the intention of using them of having then changed in the future... right now, i have about 2,000 pieces which is about 500 pesos or 12 dollars... and the number is still growing... my mother and husband would urged me to go to the bank or to the nearest gasoling station to have them changed to paper money but i simple refuse... and told them that i wanted more just to stop them from bugging me about it... I keep them in special tin cans that originally had cookies in them... and i think i need more... Now, as i was reading the news... i chanced upon a woman who saved her pennies for 19 years and accumulated around 55,000... now that is a lot... i wonder how long it would take me to save that many... here is the link... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080124/ap_on_fe_st/odd_pennies_saved;_ylt=AqTujYDNgEvUlHxK8raaSqQZ.3QA

I am like you. I still have some rolls of nickels (.05 USD coins) that the hotel gave us to go gamble with when we got married. Instead of putting them in a slot machine I just kept them. It is not illegal to "hoard" this kind of coin. Whenever I find a coin from some other nation's currency, I save it, too. I have a little collection of low denomination coins from our friendly neighbors, Mexico and Canada, some European countries, and even some from Korea, I think, which are interesting because of the square holes in them. Coins would be easier to carry, I think if they all came with holes in them.

I also did my own share of saving US pennies and quarters when i was working in GTMO... but when it was time to go back home... i had to change them because they were too heavy... so i just chose one for every state... and i think i was able to collect around 25 to 30 states... I remember one time in the news... the head of our the Phil Central Bank urged people not to hoard coins so that the country can save from producing more money coins... but i acted as if i did not hear him...

I did some waitressing back in college and collected a few interesting coins that way, too, and yes, they are heavy, especially when you are on your feet 10 hours with a whole pocket full of them, but better a full pocket than an empty one!

We do that too....we have one of those old cookie tins in which we drop our coins (Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5 and 50 paise). When the box is around 3/4th full, we sort them and exchange them. My husband handles this part and tells me when he thinks we should exchange...which is once in a couple of months. Usually it is around Rs 3,000 when we exchange.

lol...oh yes. We usually put it in the family fund. lol..a piggy bank or a bamboo stem would be too small for what we collect. The cookie box is very heavy and difficult to lift with all the coins.

Wow... so saving coins is quite a family activity for you... what do you usually do with that money that you are able to collect?... some of the people in my country use piggy banks and a stem for the bamboo plant... thank you for the response...

I just changed the coins last month and got my son a new video game.

The good thing about collecting coins is that we don't really feel any financial pressure when each coin is put inside a tin can... but when they are changed into paper money... we instantly feel like we are a few dollars richer... i bet your son is enjoying his new video game to the fullets... thanks for the response...

I used to save all my change. Every time I had 50.00 saved I put it into my savings account. Right now it takes every penny we have to survive. I had to roll pennies for my daughters hot lunch this week. Hopefully in thye near future I can start saving my change again.

Hello aseretdd, I also have a soft spot for 50 cents coin. I have three special boxes to keep them. Sometimes when I am out of coin, I take the it out from the box. It seldom happens though... I have no intention to change it to Malaysian Ringgit in a near future. But if one day, I have too many of them, I think of going to the bank and deposit all to my son's bank account. As for the time being, I will keep them all *smiles*

I collect money from other countries. I have money from England, Jamaica, Bahamas, Iraq, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and some other places..I can't go look because I don't carry it with me so it is all at home and we are still at the hotel. I have both paper money and coins. My husband brings me home money when he on deployments. As for saving our own coins, I do this too. I don't save them forever though. I just save them when I am saving up for something like a vacation or something special. We just dump all of our change in a Pringles chips can. When we are doing really well with money we will do this too. That way when times get tight we can just cash in all the change we saved.

Wow, i never thought of using pringles can as a storage for my coins... thanks for the idea... you must have quite a number of coins from all over the world... well after a few years or those... or when your children inherit your collection... those coins would cost like triple their original value... so just keep collecting them... thanks for the response...

I like to keep my cents, you never know. they say that some day it may be worth $.05 for one cent. It cost more to produce one cent, so sooner or later they will buy it back... I don't have enough room to keep 55K cents, but I have some change saved....lol

I sure wish that would happen... but why does it cost more to produce pennies... they are lighter and smaller than other coins?... well coins don't really take a lot of space... i use those rolls that they use in banks... much easier to count that way... thanks for the response...

I am to cheap to save coins around my house. I have a small satsh but it never gets very big because I put it in the bank and let it grow there or I spend it on something that I would have otherwise needed paper money for. I am one of thoes people who use a million coupons then pay in change, But I also can afford to put food on the table so I dont complain about it much.

This makes me wish that there are more coupons to be used in my country... coupons are not very popular here... except for macdonalds and jollibee... but i think you are doing the right thing by putting your small stash in the bank... thanks for the response...

I collect them too but I don't let it pile up like yours. if I have collected like 40 pieces (10 pesos), I would use it immediately. I also collect 10-cent and 5-cent coins and that's what I really collect because I can't use them easily. its hard to count when you're in a hurry like paying in the cashier in the grocery or paying fare in a tricycle. ^__^;; I don't know how many I got but I think its nothing compared to your 25-cent coins. ^__^;; I think you should wait until your coins amount to a thousand or more. 500 is a small money nowadays. it can be gone in a second and you would feel you just wasted your 25-cent coins for nothing. ^__^

I have quite a few collection of old 10 cent coins... and they date back to the 1930's... they are very easy to keep... my 25 cent coins are stock away... still piling up... i plan to put them in the bank when they reach more than a thousand... 10 peso coins are very easy to collect and to use... especially for paying jeepney and tricycle fare... thanks for the response...

It is amazing how much change (coins) one can accumulate over time. Almost like a 'froced' savings plan I try to make it a habit of filling up my tank so there will be change left over and putting into a plastic container. That container, once full, could easily fund a trip somewhere or something nice to someone...just on the change you have in your pocket!

Wow... i never thought of it as a forced savings plan... more of an unnecessary savings... those coins that we sometimes hate to put in our pocket since they are heavy and they make noise... can really come in handy when they are saved over time... i haven't updated my latest count... but i think they can indeed fund a small trip... thanks for the response...

I collect coins from other countries when I get them. Also I save my change and put it in a can. When it overflows I roll them all up. It's nice to save all of my change and once a year I cash them all in for a family vacation. I should have been saving them for the past 19 years and maybe I would have saved 55,000....lol. Have a great day.

My father had ancient coins and sometimes one that was worth a small fortune. it is different to join currencies that are still in use. Here in Brazil , the government has changed several times the our coin.:- Cruise, cruise new, cross, cross new and finally: real. As the year of issue of the currency it can assert more in the future. The same coin with a yar in which feww coins minted equal..later can assert anything.

I am saving some old coins which i intend to give my grand children... by that time... i think those coins will be worth a small fortune since they will be more than 100 years old or almost 200 years old... My country also change the coin designs a lot of times so there is always something new to collect... but i don't exactly know if the frequent change is good or bad for the economy of a country... thanks for the response...

wow, you must be related to my husband then. I was able to roll about $1000 of coins he collected for a span of 3 years. continue doing it, just be sure that your husband is not getting some few coins from your piggy bank LOL (my brother would always check my bags for loose coins everytime he needs to buy snack).

Wow... $1000 is a lot of money... what did you do with that amount?... did you put it in the bank or bought something special?... oh well, my husband doesn't really bother my coins because he has some of his own... and i would sometimes ask him to put some in my collection... thanks for the response...
