Mom buried her second husband in October 2005. While I try, along with my other siblings, to visit her as much as possible, she is alone in her home alot. I have been trying to get her to get a dog. She finally has found one she fell in love with. A male Pomeranian. He should be perfect for her. He will only get up to 4 lbs. in weight. My niece and her are picking him up Thursday, then going to the pet store to start the spoiling process. I cannot wait to meet him and will do so on Friday. I will take my camera and take photos so can I share him with ya'll. I am so delighted that Mom will have Petey Boy (that will be his name). I think he will bring her much happiness. Give her a reason to get out of bed in the morning. What do ya'll think about this? Do you think it will work?

Thanks! Mom wanted to call him Peter, after her husband. I suggested Petey Boy (I think that was the dog in The Little Rascals). I thought that sounded cuter than Peter. Besides, if he gets in trouble, then she can call him Peter!! LOL I will post his picture in a new discussion, probably Saturday afternoon! I can't wait to meet him! PEACE

People need something to do in order to forget things that aren't healthy to be thinking about. I have 3 dogs and 3 cats, and take care of them along with my family, so I don't really know it that's gonna work, cause I've never lived alone. The dog may help, but I don't think it is going to be enough. If you can, try to find some things for your mom to spend the time and distract herself: clubs, schools, church or other projects. When you add that to the dog she's getting, she may start feeling better. My grandma has buried 2 husbands also, and she enjoys her life with things from her church. She's living happy this way. That's what I recomend: for her to try and do the same.

She is in The Red Hat Society. They socialize by going to lunch twice a month. They are all going to see The Jersey Boys, in February, in Chicago. She does do things, but it is those days when I call her at noon and she is still in bed that bother me. Petey Boy will need her attention daily. She really sounds so happy to have this dog. He is only 12 weeks old, so she gets to watch him grow up. PEACE

It should work. She likes dogs? and she really likes this dog? Then it should work beautifully. When Petey Boy gets home, post a picture.

I think this is an excellent idea...It is so very sad when a person loses their husband or wife and are left alone...I think that you children have done well by your Mom and i think this new "peteyBoy will bring her much joy and this will help her and give her something to do with these lonely days ahead..Pomeranians are a perfect choice and they make great companions...Your Mom is blessed to have children who care for her.....

Yes, i totally agree that her petey boy will bring delight into her life. i know quite a couple of people who in their solitude found happiness through their pets. I think owning a pet have positive psychological effects like it gives us renewed energy when we feel tired or depressed. Your idea of giving her petey boy is a big thumbs up and i'm sure it will really work. good job!

i am a divorcee twice over and live on my own but have two bearded collie crosses--they give me the undying love, loyalty, comfort that i never received from my ex husbands-am sorry to hear about your mum's loss but a little dog will give her the same love, comfort and loyalty she needs and will always be there for her wether she is at home or just gone out for a while and then your mum will be greeted with so much love and happiness from her dog i honestly think this decision will work and the bond between them both will grow each day, also your mum will be able to hopefully get over her grief a bit quicker --i think you all have made a good choice and this will not only work but will make your mum a happier person-from littleowl
