Who is your favorite OLD TIME cartoon character....going way back!

Olive Oyl one of my favorites! - Olive Oyl from Popeye
United States

I used to enjoy the old Popeye cartoons and it was mainly because of his girlfriend Olive Oyl and her antics. She was so tall and skinny and clumsy to boot. It always made me laugh the way Bluto would try to win her away from Popeye and she would scream and yell for Popeye to save her. I loved the movie Robin Williams did and thought Shelley Duvall made an awesome Olive Oyl. Do you have a favorite cartoon character from years ago? Did they ever make it into the movies? lol....Are they still playing on tv so your kids can see them now?

My favorite channel on Direct TV is Boomerang. It plays all the old cartoons that I grew up watching.. some older than me and some are just my generation. Flinstones, Jetsons, Snorks, Smurfs, Pound Puppies...etc. etc. It's great. I don't know what my exact favorite was cause I liked a lot of cartoons as a kid. I watched the Aristocats last night and I'm watching Oliver and Company right now. I love cartoons. I think Horror and Cartoon are the biggest collections of the DVD's I own. Go figure.

I especially liked the Flintstones and then the movie when it came out. I was surprised how close to the cartoons it came.

You know I'm surprised they've never made a live action Jetsons. ESPECIALLY with the technology these days. I think they'd make a pretty cool Jetson movie. But yeah. I loved the popeye movie, the cartoons were alright. I don't get kids shows today. I just don't think they are as good as they were way back when. Live action or cartoon. and I'm not gonna say it's cause i'm "too old" because kid shows from a few years ago (Lizzie Mcguire and Even Stevens for example) I loved! But the crap they have today like Hannah Montana... I just don't get. Speaking of, did you ever decide whether or not to watch High School Musical?

LOL - I too loved Popeye but avoided watching it at one point because my Mom always used him as an example to get me to eat spinach - I was afraid it would remind her we hadn't had it in awhile. Fun thing is the way you discribed Olive Oyl - sounded like you were discribing me back then :) I think my favorite was Mickey Mouse though - mainly because when I was young we lived in California and a friend of mine was actually a guest on "The Mickey Mouse Club" I felt like I knew a real life movie star.

lol...my mother used Popeye to get me to eat spinach too and I ended up likeing it. I think knowing someone who was a guest on the Mickey Mouse Club would have been like knowing a movie star....

I like it now too but I don't think Mom's power of pursuasion had anything to do with it - as I aged my taste changed and I like a lot of things I didn't like back then. Robin, my friend, was a baton twirler, she was really really good and we were about 8 years old when she was on the show - dating myself here, that was the same year JFK was shot.

I really loved the antics of Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd, ctry. And, I found myself going around my apartment the other day humming the theme song from Mighty Mouse. I had to stop and ask myself, "Now, where did that come from?" LOL I was a real cartoon maniac back in those days -and I still watch some cartoons even now. They have certainly come a long way though.

I loved Mighty Mouse too and actually thought he was cute. I don't know what it was that attracted me to him but I wouldn't miss him when his cartoons were on.

Underdog hand down! I used to watch it all the time when I went to visit my Grandparents because we didn't have a TV. I even named a pet chicken Sweet Polly Purebred. Have you seen the new movie?

I wanted to see that movie so bad but never got the chance. I'm hoping my son can find it for me and make a copy. I also loved Underdog.

When I was little I loved She-Ra and the Smurfs. Neither you will find on the air today. I hate the cartoons for kids today. I just want to bash dora the explorer over the head with a spanish to english dictionary. and don't get me started on the doodlebops or wonder pets!

lol ...I agree with you. The kids today don't know what a good cartoon really is. To me Dora and Diego aren't cartoons and aren't even funny. I realize their supposed to be teaching the kids but why not give them some old fashioned cartoon to enjoy themselves once in awhile.

I don't think Popeye is anywhere on tv either. There are so many newer cartoon characters that they have no room for one that's that old.

Tazmanian devil is so cool. I also like the Flintstones. Martin Martian was cool too, as well as the great big fuzzy monster who was his pet and wanted to adopt Bugs Bunny.

Also Johny Quest (not the remake show, but the original), the Wonder Twins..and the real greats like Bugs and the gang, Scooby etc and the Superfriends/Superheros etc... I too loved the Popeye movie...Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall were both perfect in that flick.

Betty Boop. I remember watching the occasional Betty Boop before this... but my real obsession started when I cut my hair a certain way quite a few years ago and my coworkers at the newspaper where I worked at the time said I looked like her. After that, I really got into Betty Boop, and she's still my favorite old-time cartoon character now. :) I don't really see her on, but there are those really cheap cartoon collections you can get on DVD for about a dollar, and we have some of those. So I'm sure at some point my child will encounter Betty Boop, besides my collection of Betty Boop dolls.

I've found a lot of people like Betty Boop and there is so much memorabelia (sp?) around regarding her. Your right in that there are a lot of cheap DVD's and it's great for people who like her.

Well, being that I have my favorite cartoon character as my pic for myself, I gather you could now seed it's Yosemite Sam. I always watched Looney Tunes and loved most all of the characters, but Sam is my favorite. I have a tattoo of him on my right bicep, so that cements it even more. Good question...brings back lots of memories of my childhood and even though they came out lots of years before I was born, the history of them, how they were drawn, who did voices, etc. intrigued me always and I have the most massive collection of these animated characters from Looney Tunes...Does that make me Looney Tune too?LOL

lol... if that makes you Looney Tunes then there are a lot of people just like you! Yosemite Sam has always been a favorite of my son and he is only 32 so it's also way behind his time.

Hi! The Jetsons were my all time favorite. I loved to sing the opening jingle.. "meet George Jetson"... It was a great cartoon which featured futuristic concepts and was a precursor to many other family cartoons. Weren't the old ones the best?

Yes, the old ones were the best and I loved the Jetsons. I think it's funny that they thought all that stuff would have been invented by now. I wouldn't mind having a Rosey around right now.

OMG, I absolutely loved Mr. Magoo!! His antics were hilarious. I remember when the Leslie Neilson played Mr. Magoo in a movie, but the movie wasn't much of a hit because many groups came forward and blasted the character for "making fun of blind people." Had they done their homework before complaining they would have found that Mr. Magoo wasn't even blind, he just refused to wear his glasses!

I loved that Martian in those Bugs Bunny cartoons, the way he dressed up like a Roman Soldier and was always trying to conquer or exterminate the earth and then Bugs Bunny would come along and foul him up. I felt it was quite funny, this Martian had all this scientific equipment, things that could blow up planets, and yet there was this carrot chewing rabbit. They are still on, and there has been a Bugs Bunny Movie but I was an adult at the time, and I hardly watch cartoons now.

I remember watching Cedy and Sarah, the princess. Naturally during the old days, we only watch the local channel plus the fact that we are in the province. I became familiarize with cartoon characters when I grew up and I loved Tom and Jerry. LOL

I love Popeye too. But of all the cartoons that I watched as a kid years ago, the one that I like most was Looney Tunes from Warner Brothers. Actually I love all the characters there, but if I have to pick one, then it will have to be the adorable wascal wabbit Bugs Bunny. These cartoons gave us so many hours of fun and entertainment when we were young. Frankly, even as adults, we still enjoyed them. It's such a pity they don't produce such cartoons anymore, but these lovable and affectionate Looney Tunes characters still have a great hold on children today. Seeing these characters in Dreamworld themepark make me think back on my childhood days.
