For those who like to drink cold water after a meal, this is for you...

Ever since I learned that drinking cold water after a meal is not advisable, I am now starting to drink warm water after every meal. Here's the reason why: The cold water we drink after a meal will solidify the oily stuff that we just consumed. It will slow down the digestion of food. Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal. I hope you guys find this piece of info helpful. Well, prevention is always better than cure....

Okay, I get this from some of my patients quite a bit. Let me start off by saying your body doesn't quite work like the drain in your kitchen. Eating fatty foods that are hard for your body to digest will slow your digestive system. Not burning the calories you take in will slow your digestive system. Drinking a cold beverage will not do it. Now if you are sick and feel like throwing up, drinking cold water will make it worse. This is due to cold water acting as a stomach irritant. So warm water is good here. Also if you want to get hydrated faster warm water absorbs better than cold. Bad life styles, diets, and family history lead to cancer, NOT drinking cold water after a meal. Good on you for looking at ways to be healthy and prevent serious problems with your health. thanks.

Oh my goodness, I drink cold water and other cold liquids while eating and after eating all the time. I never knew that this was a health risk for me so I am glad that you posted this discussion. I will try not to drink cold water/beverages during or after consuming a meal. Last thing I need right now in my life is a cancer scare, not with all the things I am dealing with already.Again thanks for the warning I appreciate it alot.

Oh good lord, maybe that's why I'm overweight from years of drinking cold water with and after my meal! Ugh how horrid to think of the cold water solidifying the oily stuff inside as per your description! I think I might have to rethink my eating/drinking habits somewhat! Thanks for sharing! x

To this point in this thread only isin07 got it right. How awful is that? http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/coldwater.asp Just because it shows up in your Inbox, just because it is from a friend, just because it has been passed around a lot doesn't make it true. Snopes.com is your friend: use it please!

Hi psyche49f, That's good advice you have given there. It probably doesn't matter if one doesn't have a lot of oily or fatty stuff in the diet, but it's as well to know this if you do consume solid fats with your meals. As far as cancer is concerned, if your diet is so bad as to give you colon cnacer, then abstaining from cold water after meals won't save you. The key to avoiding anaerobic degenerative disease like cancer is to keep an alkaline metabolism and a healthy, well-oxygenated cardiovascular system. And the way to do that is to consume lots of raw fruit and vegetables and as little animal products (including dairy products) as possible. If you have to eat animal products, then fermented dairy products are probably least harmful of all the animal products, followed maybe by eggs. Raw is better than cooked... The message is - eat as little animal products as you can, eat as much raw fruit and vegetables as you can.

Thanks for the good intentions, but this is not true. It's another urban myth. http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/coldwater.asp

I agree. If more than us post it, perhaps others here will actually bookmark http://www.snopes.com and look things up rather than mindlessly passing it on without acknowledgement that it isn't true. One can hope that people that post here will, anyway. Fingers crossed!

My my, i never even thought of that.. it sounds like something that common sense would kick in and tell you doesn't it!! lol. I don't drink cold water with my meals, but usually cold milk! I guess that would do the same thing huh ? But wouldnt your inner body heat warm up the milk enough to resolidify the fat and oils we consume ?

I gather that drinking cold water does not flush out the fat that hot water does, so cold water is not good if you want to use water in your weight loss program. Does not sound that good. It is amazing that all this healthy information is now coming to light after the damage has been done. I guess it is with those baby boomers who are now entering retirement and find they are not that healthy. Of course, being a pre baby boomer, well as they say damage has been done. Not sloppy fat, but solid.

I'd never heard that. Thank you for contributing that info. But where did you read that, so we can read more in detail? Also, what if it is just cool water, opposed to COLD? Thanks

Thanks for your valuable tip for health. Our family has the normal practice of taking hot soup or hot chinese tea while having our meal. After reading your information I then come to know that the cold water could solidify the oily stuff we have just consumed and will hinder the process of digestion of food and will lead to the serious consequence of causing cancer. Yeah, it is true that precaution is better than cure.

well that is an interesting theory - I wonder if that is another way that drinking coffee and teas is beneficial to weight loss? I find it curious, though, that this process would happen given our internal temperature - maybe best to cut out those fatty meals while we are at it too, though. thanks for this interesting discussion

That is funny cuz when I was trying to lose some weight, I was told that Ice water actually boosts your metabolism and flushes out the fats. I don't remember all the details but it all made sense when I read it. I began drinking lots of ice water and like magic...my pounds shed and my belly shrunk. I still drink tons of ice water....swear by it as i'd tried everything else t o lose.

Everytime when i finish my meal,i used to drinking water, specially cold water. My mother told me several times, don't drink water after meal,it is not good for health, but i seldom to do that.i still drink. After reading i try to abstain from the habit.I want to make my body healther. But it is better not to drink anything after meal.I have good reason to believe that drinking after meal will rush our acid stomach. It is not good for stomach to digest food.so drink water no mater cold water and hot water.

Thank you for the helpful information. I know this might sound strange, but you have given me a glimmer of hope! I have a big problem with gaining weight. I'm in the process of figuring out whether or not it's a true medical condition or if it's just a matter of my eating more calories than I burn. I don't want the food to collect in my intestines and bring cancer; however, I could possible try drinking the cold water after a meal, but not all the time. My goal is to slow down my metabolism just a bit so that I'm actually retaining something to put a little fat on my bones. (LOL) My metabolism is a runaway train right now, and I'm in my early twenties. Everyone tells me it's going to catch up with me sooner or later. I can't wait until the day! (LOL) However, I also want to be healthy and know what works and what doesn't. So I really like the information from this discussion. I feel smarter already! Given your knowledge of this subject, I'd be pleased to hear your opinion about drinking cold water after a meal to slow down metabolism in order to gain weight. Thanks for sharing and for a great discussion!
